So, TPD has 42 officers under quarantine right now. Our agency could be doing better in protecting deputies from possible exposure. I know the job has risks for exposure to all types of disease, but the fact is reducing potential exposure lowers the possibility of contracting the virus. We already work with limited manpower. Having deputies quarantined would make it worse. I would suggest following the examples other agencies are setting. Set up a procedure for online reporting without concern for how it affects procap. Have supervision cancel calls which are nonsense and shouldn’t involve law enforcement. Limit exposure in patrol cars. Provide disinfectant to clean air and surfaces in cars. Keep deputies one per vehicle. No ride-alongs at all. Two people sitting inches from each other in the front seats possibly exposing each other is not smart. A solution would need to be found for STI’s and trainees. Possibly screening body temperatures before starting shifts. Its unfortunate the academy shut down, but have students doing online study and reading instead of forcing them to ride along with deputies. The students want to limit exposure also. Acquire masks and require deputies to wear them on calls and in district offices. These are just a few thoughts on this unprecedented time in our history Take care and wash those hands.
