Sponsorship of Out Of State applicants
Does Polk County sponsor out of state applicants with their stipend program (paid academy training) or is that only open to Florida residents?
Thanks in advance. Lookin got make the jump to central Florida from up north. Polk seems like a decent place.

Yes. Out of state or in state. We’ll sponsor both—especially if you come with any type of background: military, college, etc.

Follow up question, does Polk have a good amount of details and OT for patrol for extra cash? Up here, it’s easy for cops to make six figures.. I recognize pay scales differ, but just wondering..

You’d be hard-pressed to make 6 figures here. But there are a decent amount of details. We aren’t overflowing with them though. But there are opportunities to work OT in the jail.

Most details are posted first come/first served with an agency of 600+ sworn. There a lot of closed or scheduled details if you know who organizes them. There is currently (and has been for years) absolutely no overtime for patrol. Staff gets pissed when a deputy gets even 1 hour of overtime in four weeks. They have recently started some callout for short shifts, but that comes and goes depending on how short staffed we are. We are supposed to release a ton of new deputies in the coming months so we won't be so short anymore.
We are a fast growing county and we need good, experienced people who want to work. Luckily, there is an out of state academy that is only like, 2-3 weeks.

Stay as far from the POLK COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE as you possibly can. Speaking from experience. A horrible agency to work for and the pay is awful. Most deputies will tell you they have never been degraded or treated worse in any profession.

Flex time?
Anyone who thinks they need to work for the POLK COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE should definitely inquire on the meaning of flex time before working there. They should also read up on their Florida labor laws.
