Fire Rescue Beats to Their Own Drum

In his own words, Sheriff Gregory Tony believes in “promoting from within and utilizing the talent that exists within the Broward Sheriff’s Office”. However, the Fire Chief Joe Fernandez, has gone OUTSIDE the agency to hire his cronies, many in key positions of supervision and management. This demonstrates a lack of shared vision. How does this align with Sheriff Tony’s direction? Who will be hired from the outside next?

    Jonathan Yavneh-City of Miami

    Richard Walterman-City of Miami

    Terrence Davis-City of Miami

    Edward Piderman-City of Miami

    Robert Palestrant-Miami Dade Fire Rescue

    Bruce Angier-City of Boca Raton

    Frank Corregio-City of Boca Raton

    Thomas O’Connell-City of Sunrise

    Todd Draizin-City of Sunrise

    Bradley Masters-City of Pembroke Pines

    Kenneth Yost-City of Pembroke Pines

    Eric Busenbarrick-City of Hollywood

    Harris Henbest-City of Margate

Note: The Fire Chief’s closest cronies (Davis and Piderman) were not only brought in to double dip but also received multiple promotions into upper management with only months at BSO. Shame on past labor leadership also for allowing this to occur. Our department means OUR department.

Apparently, it doesn't mean our department anymore. It appears that it's everybody but BSO's.

You can add Ivan Chavez-Miami to that group. Another Joe Fernandez pal! You guys are ridiculous. BSO/FTL all over again but with Fire.

Six of those names were not hired by Fernandez. They were hired by his predecessor, Stravino.

Very true. The problem is not Fernandez per se (although he’s in way over his head). The problem is that most of the Chiefs come in from the outside and don’t trust the staff that’s already in place. They quickly hire old friends and cronies to build a support base even though these folks are not up to the task. BSO Fire Rescue is a house of cards, top heavy, expensive and ripe for failure. There’s not a lot of difference between Stravino and Fernandez.

I would say there is NO DIFFERENCE between Fernandez and Stravino other than their fetishes.
