there was certainly talk years ago. in 92, sam the shill fields lobbied for privatization. he didnt have full county support and there was a rather contentious and loud county commission meeting packed with dod, pba reps, etc.i certainly hope its not contracted. its already going and as been going downhill for some time. but going private is much worse. glad i'm out but hoping for all those working there.

That scum Israel was the one that started the ball rolling on the privatization. Tony just picked up the ball and ran with it. I wouldn’t put it past Israel to blame Tony for it.

There would still be a budget, if the jail was privatized. It would be reduced to a few lines, as the managing company would handle disbursement of funds now handled by the Sheriff's Office. There is also a good chance that many, if not most, of the current DOD staff would be hired by the managing company, at least initially.

The biggest problem, from an agency standpoint, is that the Sheriff would lose control of the DOD budget. Currently, funds can be moved anywhere in the agency for any reason. The Sheriff is not locked into line item spending. But, with DOD contracted out, that whole budget would essentially be placed in sole control of the company managing the jail and DOD facilities. Wheter the current sheriff wouuld actuslly congtract with a private comppany to manage DOD or not, is yet to be seen.

Not the sheriff's call to privatize the jails, even if he wanted to. It is a contract service from the county commission. They get to decide privatization and they are solidly against privatization.
