Not the sheriff's call to privatize the jails, even if he wanted to. It is a contract service from the county commission. They get to decide privatization and they are solidly against privatization.

There would still be a budget, if the jail was privatized. It would be reduced to a few lines, as the managing company would handle disbursement of funds now handled by the Sheriff's Office. There is also a good chance that many, if not most, of the current DOD staff would be hired by the managing company, at least initially.

The biggest problem, from an agency standpoint, is that the Sheriff would lose control of the DOD budget. Currently, funds can be moved anywhere in the agency for any reason. The Sheriff is not locked into line item spending. But, with DOD contracted out, that whole budget would essentially be placed in sole control of the company managing the jail and DOD facilities. Wheter the current sheriff wouuld actuslly congtract with a private comppany to manage DOD or not, is yet to be seen.

And don’t forget there is a feasibility study about breaking off the road to other departments
