We are very far behind and good people are going elsewhere. Time to really reevaluate this situation, it’s hard enough to get qualified people to want to work in law enforcement. We should be what 2 year municipal cops dream of being. That starts with a competitive salary, especially since we have no control over the retirement system. Maybe get rid of pay parity so it keeps the cost down.

You take the investment plan and buy life insurance for your spouse, that way she gets money when you die plus whatever is left in the investment plan, rather than do FRS Option 3 or 4 which has the survivorship benefit. A bunch of retirees hired financial advisers who did that for them. They are very happy with the results vs the FRS pension.
If you use the traditional FRS pension and both of you die the FRS keeps the rest of the money instead of it going to your kids or relatives. You have to get a financial adviser to help you with this plan.
These rumors about the FRS pension being bad are complete BS because you can choose the investment plan and then you are in control of your own money.
