Scott in Deerfield and Pompano today answering this question

One of the country’s leading Democratic donors has opened his formidable wallet for the Broward County sheriff installed by Florida’s Republican governor, giving $500,000 to the committee behind incumbent Gregory Tony’s 2020 election effort.

The $500,000 payment from Fort Lauderdale hedge-fund titan Donald Sussman, confirmed by Sussman and a source familiar with Tony donations, easily qualifies as the largest contribution yet in the 2020 race for Broward sheriff and practically doubles what’s been reported so far for the two best-known candidates.

Tony’s committee, Broward First, had raised just $229,000 between July and October, and ex-sheriff Scott Israel — ousted by Gov. Ron DeSantis in the wake of the 2018 school massacre in Parkland — has raised about $270,000 for his 2020 campaign and the Committee for a Stronger Broward, the political committee helping his election effort. The Sussman donation was made in November, and should become public by Dec. 10, the next filing deadline for Broward candidates.

In a recent interview, Sussman said he never expected to be a player in the sheriff’s race but said he was impressed by Tony’s tenure. “He was brought to my attention by local law enforcement,” said Sussman, an art patron and philanthropist who hires off-duty police for social events at his waterfront home. “He is highly driven. He is low ego ... The governor did a spectacular job finding him and appointing him.”

Representatives for Tony and Israel had no comment on the Sussman donation.

The Tony camp hopes the high-profile support from Sussman will blunt efforts by Israel to position himself as the favorite Democrat in the race. Tony, Broward’s first black sheriff and a registered Democrat, was appointed by DeSantis in January, the same day the state’s top Republican governor suspended Israel, then the county’s most powerful Democratic office holder. Despite praise for DeSantis on the Tony pick, Sussman said he plans to support a Democrat in the 2022 Florida governor’s race.

Sussman was Hillary Clinton’s top donor in 2016, giving more than $22 million, and a backer of Andrew Gillum’s 2018 campaign against DeSantis. Sussman gave about $1.5 million to Gillum, according to the Tampa Bay Times, and earlier this year was one of the donors listed on a subpoena from a federal grand jury investigation looking at the Democratic nominee’s 2018 gubernatorial campaign.

Tony, a former Coral Springs police sergeant, and Israel, who was serving his second term as sheriff when his agency came under criticism for its response to the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High, will face each other in Broward’s Democratic primary in August. The winner should be the heavy favorite in the November general election for a county where Democrats outnumber Republicans by roughly two to one.

For Sussman, the infusion of cash into the Broward sheriff’s race is another example of the nationally prominent donor trying to influence local politics in 2020. He’s already one of the largest donors in the Miami-Dade mayoral race, donating $250,000 to fellow Democrat Daniella Levine Cava, a county commissioner running to succeed term-limited Carlos Gimenez for the non-partisan post.

That donation technically has Sussman involved in a second sheriff’s race, since Miami-Dade is the only county in Florida where the elected mayor holds the powers of sheriff, an elected office everywhere else in Florida. A constitutional amendment adopted by voters in 2018 requires Miami-Dade to begin electing a sheriff in 2024.

Scott does have the black community but more importantly they have his back. Interestingly, he also has the Jewish community and the elderly community. Temporary has Parkland, well, some of Parkland anyway. I like Pollocks chances more than Tony for championing the black vote in Broward. Don’t fool yourself the key power democrats behind Israel are still in place.

Really? Name them please. Roz O. and Thurston are not 'key' democrats. After you name these key democrats, please name the Parkland parents and the one city manager who demanded no juvenile FELONY arrests. Your plan to scapegoat the city that you failed is backfiring miserably. It wasn't the event that was the failure, it was the refusal to step up and point blame where it was deserved, at BCPS. And by the way, the Jewish vote is long gone.
