CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – Coral Springs High School was placed on lockdown last Friday after reports of a suspicious person on campus.
Police quickly realized there was no threat and the all-clear was given, but the story took a twist.
It turns out officers didn't immediately have keys to enter the classrooms.
Lori Alhadeff, a school board member whose daughter was killed in last year's Parkland school shooting, is aware of the issue.
"They got access to the box, but when they went inside there were no keys in the box," she said.
The box she's referring to is known as a "Knox Box." It's where first responders can find master keys.
Teachers were reportedly sent text messages to open the doors for police, which is a violation of school policy because an intruder could be on the other side.
"It's a problem because law enforcement needs to respond as quickly as possible to an incident to get onto campus," Alhadeff said.
A Coral Springs police spokeswoman told Local 10 News the lockdown was only precautionary and, had the situation been worse, officers could have easily gone inside the classrooms.
The incident took place one day after a mass shooting at a California school and in the same county where 17 people were killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in February 2018.
“Due to statutory exemptions pertaining to school safety and security, our office is not able to provide information or comment,” Cathleen Brennan, a spokeswoman for Broward County Public Schools, said in a statement.

I hope that school changes ALL of the locks at that school, who knows the intentions of the person that has the master key. That key opens every door in the school.

This could have been catastrophic and we don't have time for excuses. It starts from the top and the top has no experience to start with. This isn't GIJoe, they both need to go. No excuses!! Fire them both!! This is what happens when you have poor leadership. DiSantis? Where are you? The loser Parkland parents that went to Israels hearing with running mouths, why aren't any of you making statements on the news about what just occured?
Coral Springs Chief and Gregory Tony need to be Fired.

Huh???
Look, I realize that people are using this to make some kind of political point, but, really?
So, there was no key to open locked classrooms in some Knoxbox at the school. Big deal. One could have been acquired easily from and school administrator, or the janitor. And, as there was no active shooting in progress, there is no reason not to have an administrator accompany any sweeper teams.
What this was was nothing more than a knee-jerk overreaction by the school and LE. A student tells a "security monitor" that she thinks she saw a former student on campus with a "bag" at 0730 hrs. The school administration goes into a complete meltdown and orders a code red alert lockdown, disrupting the entire school day, as well as traffic on surrounding streets, and finally determines that it was most likely a current student, who was innocent of any wrongdoing. So, if all entry is monitored and screened, what is the big deal? Oh, wait, there is no entry screening. Fortunately, this was all a hoax or mis-identification and so was only an annoyance. However, if it had actually been a sighting of an armed individual, intent upon committing mass murder, how many casualties would there be at Taravella before an armed response stop him? Now, students know that they can simply claim to have seen a "suspicious person with a bag" on campus and close down the entire school. Gotta love it when plan come together.

I highly agree with your points. We have become paranoid and pandering as a society that these kids are using it to their advantage. Some kid who probably had a big exam needed time to study and called in a false report. Until the school board makes sweeping changes, another shooting will happen in our own backyard soon.
