Ed Brodsky challenged by Betsy Young for SAO 2020

Former Sarasota prosecutor Betsy Young filed candidacy papers to enter the race for state attorney of the 12th Judicial Circuit.

Young has prosecuted thousands of felonies, including more than 150 jury trials, violent crimes and complex white-collar cases.

Young says the State Attorney’s Office is bogged down by internal conflicts and political infighting and she promises to “stop distractions” inside the State Attorney’s Office, which suffers from morale issues and has been a revolving door for prosecutors.

In 2018, former Assistant State Attorney Elizabeth Loeffler, a 21-year veteran prosecutor, was fired by State Attorney Ed Brosky for comments she made about her superiors over drinks with other prosecutors who were celebrating her birthday.

Brodsky told Loeffler: “You have questioned the integrity of the state attorney and chief assistant to other people. You are dismissed, effective today.” Brodsky denied making that statement and said he terminated Loeffler for failing to maintain his standards.
