Five Positives for Police Officers on Motorcycles

Hello Officers - The Citizen is here with a new post and something more for you to ponder and discuss.

What are the pros and cons of having more police officers on motorcycles in the city of Hialeah? Obviously, safety is an issue of great concern. But, let's look at five positive points and let us know what you think?

1- Motorcycles can be obtained in larger numbers at lower operational costs. Up to 30% of the police fleet can be motorcycles. The added investment would be protective gear, but adding up would still be less costly than the standard patrol car.

2- The capability of increasing the number of police officers as a trade off for cost savings, and increasing police presence on the streets, shopping centers and other areas.

3- Motorcycles can get to a scene quicker, as they can squeeze between cars on the road and ride through and over other tighter areas and roughed surfaces.

4- Both, the right number of police on motorcycles and in patrol cars provide an added sense of pride and prestige to the officers, the department and the city they serve, when done correctly and with proper training in place.

5- Some officers on motorcycles can also be cross-trained to serve both, police and rescue operations, carrying a medical kit case and getting to the scene of an accident, emergency or trauma event faster in certain situations.

Adding more police officers on motorcycles is a huge positive!

What are your thoughts as an officer?

    good but realistic at 15%,20%
we need more officers, more cars
and to have our own cars.
these ideas can work to add
    police presence
and can work if we get there quicker
    than rescue
but it takes a big change
and do not see it happen with
    what we got going on
if you could stand in our shoes
    you understand better

In all honesty that big percentage of officers in motorcycles doesnt really do good. Due to the fact for example weather conditions, it is unrealistic to expect officers to be driving their motorcycles in bad weather. Motorman carry less necessary equipment obviosly because they are in a bike, like traffic cones, AED, crime scene tapes, etc. Motorman respond to less call for services due to the fact they cannot transport any prisioner if an arrest arises from said call. Traffic enforcement is mainly their purpose and escorts for funeral detail among others. Also in my personal opion as well lacks the wanton of officer wanting to be a motorman, whether is because they dont know how to ryde a motorcycle, or because they dont want to be sitting in a motorcycle for extended periods of time, or perhaps the sun. Motorman is a hard job and not many officers want to do that.
