Current "strong" Miami-Dade mayor Carlos Gimenez saw through the elimination of the Miami-Dade Police Department Public Corruption Investigation Bureau. Decimating the bureau to a "now for show" section; with most of the investigating talent resigning or returning to other less notable assignments.
Concerned citizens hope, should former Mayor Alex Penelas win re-reelection, he will command whomever he appoints MDPD police director to reinstitute Public Corruption Investigation; this time operating as a section within the department's Professional Compliance Bureau. The section should be led by a police lieutenant and staffed with the commensurate number of sergeants and detectives. Working in concert with the Miami-Dade's Inspector General, the FBI and the local U S Attorney's Office, and accountable to the police director, the section ought to make an impact upon the venality that pervades Miami-Dade County.
