Broward Sheriff Scott Israel announced today that he's the first Democrat in Broward history to qualify for a countywide office by collecting signatures.

His campaign manager, Amy Rose, said she thinks one or two candidates from other parties have done so. That's why his claim of "first'' gets an asterisk.

Candidates who don't qualify by signature collection pay a hefty qualifying fee. But avoiding the fee isn't the only reason candidates engage in signature drives. The campaign also benefits from the list of likely voters.

The campaign collected signatures outside polling places on primary election day, for example.

Rose said the campaign was notified Tuesday by the Broward elections office that the required 10,675 signatures had been confirmed. That's just in time, since Israel's foot was injured when he was hit by a car a week ago.

"This achievement is particularly significant as it represents more than 10% of the total number of ballots likely to be cast in the August primary,'' Rose said in a written statement. "Starting with this commitment of support from Broward Democratic voters is a huge advantage for Sheriff Israel heading into the primary."

Israel was elected in 2012, ousting Republican Al Lamberti.

He had some help in collecting signatures from Dianne Thorne. If that name rings a distant bell, it's because we reported in 2013 that Thorne, close aide to notorious political strategist Roger Stone, had been hired at Broward Sheriff's Office by Israel. (Click here and here for a memory refresher. She ended up resigning.) So we see that Stone's tentacles are still under the Israel campaign tent, even though he personally has been very busy with the Donald Trump campaign.

There are others running: former law enforcement officer James Fondo, Donald "DD" Jones, career law enforcement officer Willie Jones, and Edison Jules, on the Democrat side.

No-party affiliation candidate Brian Keith Roesch also opened a campaign account.

We won't know until candidate qualifying in June whether these folks pay the filing fee or collect signatures, or just bow out. Signatures -- equal to 1 percent of the registered voters as of the last general election -- have to be turned in by May 16. Qualifying is noon June 20 through noon June 24.

Jones and Jules have raised money, the sign of a true candidacy. Fondo just entered the race, so he hasn't reported contributions yet.

The qualifying fee for a partisan office is 6 percent of the salary. In this case, the sheriff salary in Florida is $177,575, according to the supervisor of elections office. So the fee would be $10,654.

So that's how Brenda Snipes got her retirement? Who else did she rat out?

Wish this thread was true, but it is total crap. There is no investigation by anyone of anything from the 2016 Israel campaign. There is enough real incompetence and failure by Israel to go around ......... so why make up these ones that are so clearly fake? What's the point?

This is something Temporary will never have to worry about. Hell never run a campaign and certainly could never win a race.

Sheriff Israel will be back after he wins the election in 2020. Gary,Gilbert and Alan have no control of what the Broward County people want.
You 3 losers will be writing lies on si all the way through 2024 about him and his amazing team .

Because Israel is a psycho narcissist who couldn't leave well enough alone, every aspect of his life (and those affiliated with him), civilian, political, and as a LEO is now under scrutiny.
