It's not like he can't retire, he would live well on his pension. He's also not there because of his knowledge and experience. In theory, those who "earned it" deserve it. Unfortunately, the past two who "earned" it, made decisions that resulted in chaos. When you've "earned it" and choose to sign on with the devil RUNCIE, don't expect those around you to continue to make merit a first priority. PROMISE is a HUGE campaign issue, and is in no way a "red herring" as Gualtieri suggested Outside of BSO, the public does not give a flying fig about rank or LE experience. Employee votes will be inconsequential. The public sees a current Sheriff, former sergeant, whatever, who refuses to adapt to PROMISE in it's current state; and has deputies in schools practicing for an active shooter. Believe it or not, the small minority of bad kid's parents who would 'benefit" from PROMISE and some dying off seniors at Century Village are not enough. The narrative that the public will vote for Israel solely on principal (that he got screwed) is a fallacy. There's no public loyalty to him. Whether he deserved to be suspended or not, the masses can't stand the site of an arrogant whining senior citizen whose exploitation of the black community is deeply resented by those he pretended to care about. Four of the MSD dead were Jewish. That voter block is loyal to those families. The black community will play the part, walk in the voter booth and knock Israel out of the box at primary time. Jenne never earned Sheriff either. Aside from his mistakes, mainly powertrac and his Lexus loaner, the man in many ways was a good Sheriff. Jimmy Carter was a peanut farmer before he was President and the public elected him. True, he was not a good President; but after Nixon's national disgrace (Watergate) and in this case, Airport and MSD, the public votes for one they view as a good person with common sense. Israel meets none of the criteria for a 2020 win. He's a disgrunted Bernie Sanders type with major baggage.
