Accused killer who was mistakenly released from jail is captured in Georgia

An accused killer who was mistakenly released from the Broward County Jail more than 40 days ago has been captured in Georgia, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday night.

Eric Vail walked out of the jail on May 30 after the Broward Clerk of Courts had failed to produce a routine document telling the jail to keep him there.

The 28-year-old Miami man had been arrested in January and charged with the October shooting death of Wadarius Harris, 27, in Pembroke Park.

Investigators said Vail riddled a car Harris was in with an AR-15-style rifle.

Vail was arrested Wednesday evening in Jesup, Ga., the sheriff’s office said. He was found at a mobile home there.

Members of the sheriff’s SWAT/Fugitive Unit, who are also part of the U.S. Marshals Florida/Caribbean Regional Fugitive Task Force, have been investigating Vail’s whereabouts since May 30. Their investigation led them to Jesup, Veda Colemjan-Wright, a sheriff’s spokeswoman said.

“Vail resisted at first and barricaded himself inside the mobile home,” she said. “After about three hours, he was taken into custody.”

Vail will likely be extradited to Broward County to face one count of first-degree murder. The investigation continues.

Blame for Vail’s release has been hard to place as the Broward Clerk of Courts, jail and prosecutors all have blamed someone else.

Prosecutors dropped a second-degree murder charge against Vail in the shooting after a grand jury indicted him for first-degree murder for the same crime. He was supposed to be held without bond on the more serious charge, but the clerk’s office never sent that paperwork to the jail.

But it's not ok. The jail has problems which help these escapes come to the surface. Yes, escapes, plural. More disturbing is that they blame everyone else. That nasty and very angry little man Connelly stomped that very female inmate right in front of the camera and we paid 6 figures. Never admitted we did anything wrong and she and her little boy haircut retired with honors. That was before Temporary, but this "hold harmless no matter what" mindset in the jail is disturbing. Palmer has a half dozen generic excuses and sources to place blame things on, written on a piece of paper. He feels that nothing can happen on his watch, that one of those departments or agencies can't be blamed for. This last one was the Clerk. Yet we have deputies just doing their jobs and they are being arrested because Temporary is such a righteous man. He's a hypocrite fraud just like his jail. And because of that, this will happen again. None of these colonels would have lasted one Powertrack session with that blame game crap. Jenne would have ran them off immediately...
