Not sure what the current administration feelings are about the Heart Lung bill. A very good/knowledgeable attorney in this area who has represented many first responders successfully including HCSO LEO's is Tonya Oliver 813-925-0076. Her office is in the area of Tampa Bay Downs.

If you try any type of disability retirement, they threaten to arrest you for "fraud." Good Luck!

FSS 112.18 was created by the legislature as a benefit to those Firefighters/LEO's who meet the criteria contained within it for compensation because of the known health issues which can be directly related to the career. If you think you do meet such suggest you discuss your specific situation with an attorney knowledgeable in this field/statute. Previous administration at HCSO continually fought against these claims but settled/lost many times. Perhaps the current administration has changed for the better in this situation?

There have been lazy bums who tried to avoid working a low level zone by using the heart/lung bill. The agency has a responsibility to fight those losers.

    I rest my case.
Everyone, who has ever needed to medically retire, has been called a lazy bum.

So if a person gets hurt on the job after working for a significant number of years, and has no choice but to medically retire versus taking a huge pay cut and settling for a non-sworn position is a lazy bum? So if a person develops a medical issue that naturally occurs with age and a doctor determines medical retirement is a better alternative versus pain management, would this person be a lazy bum? But hey that’s a personal opinion. The old saying goes opinions are like azz holes. Every body has one and they all stink.

In the grand scheme of things I’m sure those that medically retired could give a damn about what someone things of them. Sounds like a whole lot of hating going on.

You are right. Once you burn out or become sick from the job, you become exiled and cast away. Thats how this mind fuk of a job and career is. We are worthless pawns no matter how hard we work and no matter how much of ourselves and family we give. Cops come to work and give it 300% only to be thrown away at the earliest sign of wear and tear. This is one of the core reasons where all the problems in policing and the relationship between cops and people start. Once you realize this and slow down in order to last another two decades or so, they see this and treat you as if you have betrayed them. Its one big scam and it needs to be completely redesigned. All while the self serving politicians running police agencies focus on their own agendas. Fix this and everything will follow and fall into place. These bully responses are what we constantly deal with. Keep in mind that the heart lung bill did not come from nowhere. It exists because it is a proven fact that this miserable job is extremely destructive to a persons physical and mental health. With NO systems in place to offset it.
