Quick question for sppd officers. When is it ok to arrest a patient in emergency room who strikes a hospital employee?

Also, what is the role of off duty officers at the hospital and are they restricted per their contract with sppd?

Chief of police, legal council and two majors were at the hospital today explaining why arrests couldn’t be made unless felony battery occurred.

Is this a county prosecutor issue or is this a Dept policy issue?

Average RN is basically mentally a high schooler. Sometimes fights break out in high school, gossip, ect, let the hospital security settle it.

Listen to what? The fact that St. Pete police are sending criminals to their local hospital instead of taking them to jail! Maybe you shouldn’t underestimate the intellect of your “average ER nurse”. It’s clear St. Pete Police sit in our lobby and do nothing all shift. I see it every day. Playing candy crush is an understatement, but that’s ultimately the hospitals fault bc we employe you to be there. Employing county would probably be a better option for the hospital. Look up the arrest made locally in Pinellas County where a patient was arrested immediately after throwing her sanitary pad at an RN. This would never happen at St. Anthony’s! We have had employees knocked out cold, blood and urine thrown at us, and tables thrown at us. In each case, no arrests made. The threshold for making an arrest is much higher in our facility.

Is Sasha lohn incompetent or is she following the policing strategy encouraged by the mayor and police chief?

As I see it, there are a few ways to drive down crime stats. One, take an aggressive approach and arrest criminals and make it harder to become a future criminal. Two, selectively enforce rules, go after the low hanging fruit and convince people living in the city that crime numbers are down when they’re not.

It’s ultimately the fault of voters in this town because we re not holding the mayor or the county attorneys office responsible for an approach that essentially lets criminals off the hook.

In the case of criminals being re directed to st Anthony’s, I believe this is a funding issue (the county knows the federal govt kicks in more money when a criminal patient can be re classified as a psych patient) and faulty baker act laws that are abused by sppd officers.
