SARASOTA COUNTY – Sheriff Tom Knight promoted Daniel Tutko to captain, despite having a pattern of 12 sustained internal affairs investigations.

Sheriff’s Lt. John Kost, who retired after working for 31 years at the Sarasota Sheriff’s Office, said the promotion could send the wrong message to deputies.

Kost explained: “Sheriff Knight is big on ‘If I observe a pattern of behavior, then it has to be addressed.’ Well, as a boss, when you identify a pattern of behavior that is unacceptable, then you address it – you don’t promote it. Why would Sheriff Knight promote someone with a sustained pattern of behavior? Only the sheriff can answer that.”

Knight refused to comment for this story.
