VENICE (WWSB) – The Venice Fire Department arrives first for 66 percent of all EMS calls, before Sarasota County EMS responders.

City of Venice leaders voted to terminate Sarasota County’s EMS services on October 1, 2020 – and the Venice Fire Department will take all EMS calls.

Venice Fire Chief Carvey said that for the ambulance money the city pays the county, the city can hire 25 more first responders and add three ambulances.

John Henry, a resident in Venice, said “I think what we’re missing and where the council has not done their duty is that we don’t know what the cost of divorcing the county is."

Venice and Sarasota County will continue to share fighting fires duties.
