The latest medical marijuana craze is filled with many half truths and undocumented stories of its benefits. You only have to follow the money to see where this push is coming from. Some of the biggest and earliest investors in this industry, including "For the people"are making millions now because of it. I would venture to say that if you went to the Marijuana Doctor and paid him, you would walk out with the approval to use it. The medical angle to get this pushed through, has morphed into pay me and you will get it. Gateway drug? Depends. Long before this medical craze came along, people used marijuana socially. Getting high and chilling was a way to go to butterfly heaven for a few hours. If however, you used this drug to escape from relationship, financial, or other personal problems, it can be very mentally dependent, a crutch. Initiative, yes, driving, and judgment, all are altered while high. None of the problems you had before you got high will change, so you lean on it more and more, you just want to stay high all the time. I also have noticed over the years that many who smoke also drink and do other things. This without question will have a negative effect on these individuals and society as a whole. We already know the extent people will go to get the money to buy their drugs. The negatives do outweigh the benefits, but the money behind this industry don't care, they see it as a investment. The taxes made on this will pale in comparison to public monies that will have to be spent elsewhere addressing problems from this issue.
The agency does not want to know who is an alcoholic, pot smoker, pill popper, or steroid abuser. It's more convenient that way in case someone causes liability to the agency while under the influence. If something happens then the agency just fires the offending party and reduces its liability by denying any knowledge of drug or alcohol abuse. Most importantly, it does not smear Bob's pristine political image.

Y’all are some ignorant mutha fu#%ers. If you think for one second that the agency would ignore your drug use, you are insane. Keep believing that nonsense. You’ll have a nice short career. Stupid potheads.

Only DUIs cause termination. All addictions have remained under the agency radar because nobody cares about them, especially pot smoking, booze and steroid abuse. Don't ask, don't tell unwritten policy.

Then why is there no random drug testing? Seems just the threat of it would clean up some people. I think they are fully aware of how many people that would be fired if they actually did drug testing.

That's it. Think of the money and effort it takes to replace them because the administration would have to follow its own rules. Can't sweep this one under the rug. Wouldn't want to damage the sheriff's political reputation which is so carefully managed. That's why there is no random drug testing of any sort.

This is a complex issue and the sheer number of replies and the emotions I have seen indicate this is an important issue. Many of you know what you are talking about and have brought up good points. There are quite a few LEO's using THC, they are not being tested so "don't ask don't tell". I personally think it's stupid, but there are people drinking heavy, vaping, gambling, addicted to porn and GOD knows what else. Most people over indulge in something. I like caffeine. It's not time to judge and call them all names. The vast majority are pulling their weight. Even with some urinalysis, many won't get caught. A lot of these companies testing the pee pee only test one or two bottles out of the box you send in, pour the rest out. They make a lot more money that way. If you are tested for suspicion and they check all the right boxes, your bottle will definitely get checked, but....As was already brought up: Why was marijuana "evil" for so many years, then suddenly it became our miracle cure? It's replacing the tobacco industry, but there will be much more people using than ever used tobacco. There is so much money and power here for those that peddled this.

Here the problem with drug use, by LEOs. A certain percentage of them will become addicts, either physical or psychological. when that happens, they begin using while working, or just before they come to work or on break. Then you have an armed LEO making decisions while in a mentally altered state. Only good can come of that, right? There is a reason why airline pilots are not supposed to use alcohol, or other drugs 8 hours before they fly? And, we still have pilots arriving for a flight intoxicated or caught drinking in the airport bar just before a flight. LEOs are no different. We have had LEOs involved in DUI accidents, both on and off-duty, and incidents involving other drugs, both legal and illegal, which have impacted their jobs. We have had detectives called out on cases who were intoxicated or stoned. Think about that before you get wasted when off-duty.

The current unwritten policy is just fine for those who like to party or need a little help at the gym. Don't change anything.
