    Remarkable Incompetence

The City of Sarasota has a DUI death rate twice as high as the second highest city in the state:

And what has the Chief of Police done to address this public safety issue that is killing people? Nothing.
What has the City Manager done? Apparently nothing. What has the City Commission directed the City Manager to do?Apparently nothing. What has the PIO done to warn and educate the public. Nothing.

DUI's are mostly officer-initiated arrests. If the officers aren't motivated or properly led, then arrests and prevention goes down, and deaths.

Fast forward, if you crunch the numbers (last 3 years) on the FDLE website, the Sarasota Police Department has the LOWEST DUI ARREST RATE PER OFFICER IN Sarasota County:
SCSO 1,227 arrests by 342 officers = 3.6 DUI arrests per officer per year.
Venice P.D. 86 arrests by 47 officers = 1.8 DUI arrests per officer per year.
North Port P.D. 150 arrests by 94 officers= 1.6 DUI arrests per officer per year.
Sarasota P.D. 160 arrests by 163 officers = 0.98 DUI arrests per officer per year.

In contrast to the silence of Chief Dipino Sheriff Chronister of Hillsborough took on the problem head on with public news spots and yes...an action plan. Wow, maybe he could train our chief?

If you check federal ATF statistics, Sarasota County sells more alcohol per person than any other county in the United States.

Sso has a traffic unit that works duis . They have a mobile DUI command post, they do checkpoints, etc. We have none of that. We also have 25 percent fewer cops doing way more work than 20 years ago. So when do you expect us to go out, and find drunk drivers that will pull an officer off the street for half the shift?

Obviously you are not a cop.
It doesn't take "half a shift" to process a DUI. Also, SPD has a Traffic Unit and SPD is actually making way fewer arrests than years ago.
People are actually dying because of Dipino's poor leadership that has suppressed self-initiated activity by the officers.

    Seriously?

Citizen X murders citizen Y, so you are going to hold a police officer responsible for Citizen X's murder?

Obviously you are just mis informed. It does take half of a shift to process a dui and complete all of the paperwork with the way we are treated at the jail. 99 percent chance the nurse will refuse to accept our prisoner, and we will spend 3 or 4 hours in the hospital. Yes, we have a traffic unit, they write tickets and work serious crashes. They do not work DUI patrol, check points, nights ,etc. The unit consists of 3 people, and now has a temporary person Who is being hidden there for a little while.

And yes, we do make way fewer arrests than in the past. We have lost one fourth of our officers, call volume is up, morale is down, trust in leadership is down, and people are overworked. So, going out and actively seeking out drunk drivers is not really possible. But, hey, I'm obviously not a cop.

Somebody with no experience in DUI arrests will take about 2.5 hours to process an "average DUI arrest" -- assuming there are no extenuating problems.

In the old days, making an arrest for a domestic battery was an "in and out" process (it was fast). But now the state legislature has mandated that an enormous amount of paperwork be done -- and completing an arrest for domestic battery is almost as time consuming as a DUI arrest.

In the big picture, does all the paperwork help to preserve civil rights? Yes, probably, but it comes at a price, first to the patrol officer who is taken off the street and second to the taxpayer who must pay for it all. Freedom isn't free.

Dv paperwork? You give the victim a packet, and fill out the marcy's law sheet. The victim doesn't even sign it, so how are these comparable? Marcy's law now applies to every victim of any crime.

Just look at Newtown, that's all the proof anyone will ever need as evidence of poor leadership and lack of proactivity. The people there do what they want.
