    Said Sheriff Adkinson...

MOSSY HEAD, Fla. - A local man fighting for his life, after being attacked. Investigators are still working on piecing together what happened and who is responsible.

It started with a 911 call. "911, what's your emergency."

"We received a call about a medical issue in the Mossy Head community," said Sheriff Michael Adkinson, Walton County Sheriff's Office.

When deputies arrived on scene the victim was incoherent and suffering from an injury which they say appeared to be life threatening.

We are talking about a fracture to the skull cavity," described Sheriff Adkinson. "So, it's an open wound to the brain."

For the safety of the victim, the Walton County Sheriff's Office is not releasing his name at this time but, did confirm it was a male in his 40s.

"It was pretty readily apparent that, that was the result of a felonious act and in this case we believe an aggregated battery with a deadly weapon," said Sheriff Adkinson.

The victim is still in critical condition. A possible weapon used in the attack was recovered from the scene."...which is a metal pipe in this case. We are certainly going to confirm that," add Sheriff Adkinson.

Investigators found witnesses that were near by. The Sheriff says, some of the witnesses may later turn into suspects. The charges will depend on the victim's physical condition.

"Certain today, it's aggravated battery as the charge. There will certainly be additional charges," shared the Sheriff. "If the victim was to succumb to his injuries at some point the that charge would be a felony would be upgraded to a murder charge."

As for a motive, Sheriff Adkinson said, "Probably money and or drugs. You know, we will wait to determine specifically what that is but it's reasonable at this point to believe that it involved a series of thefts."

While this is still an active investigation, Sheriff Adkinson said he feels like they are closing in on the suspect.
