Each vacancy generates a few hundred applicants. The majority of the applicants have their applications rejected because they didn't read or understand the minimum requirements. It is easy to apply for a job today so you have nothing to lose by submitting one. Once they sort out who is actually qualified they will carve that down. Veterans preference points always add to the equation. Most of the time they will try to narrow it down and interview 8-14 applicants. There is no way of telling what the test is because it changes. The written part used to be a probable cause affavidavit but who knows now. Keep in mind there are always more applicants than can be interviewed so make anything you submit perfect.

Why is that l would think people would be lined up to get a some what normal schedule with holidays of especially in a place like Miami with such a high crime rate

Open positions can be found on People First, the state personnel website. There should be at least one open. If there isn't, give it a week. The turnover is continuous.
