People Are Dying Whether You Chase Or Not
That theory that suspects running in stolen cars aren’t worth chasing because it’s just a property crime doesn’t hold water anymore. Southsiders have now killed two innocent people while joy riding in stolen cars. They kill themselves driving into ponds and crashing and burning to death. So I ask you this, how is not chasing any better than chasing if they are still killing others and themselves? The problem isn’t the stolen car, the burglary they committed, the drugs they have or warrants they are running from. The problem is that they run like they murdered someone every time they run. The threat to innocent people is their driving. They drive like maniacs whether they run for having a suspended license or a murder warrant. And the bigger problem is we just wave goodbye. Do we have to wait for the to run over some kid in the road before we can do more? Fleeing vehicles are a serious problem and we should be able to do more. PIT, Stop Sticks, Boxing In, chasing and doing something to end their rampage is needed. To end it, not to go all over the county chasing, but doing nothing is ridiculous. They’re killing people Bob, do something about it.

You can't really count the pond deaths, the Palm Harbor fiery deaths or the last guy that was hit and killed because in all of those cases, LEO's were right on their asses at high speeds. It's still a chase even if you keep the lights off, but with the lights off, the person you are chasing is under no obligation to stop for you. What sense does that make?
There will always be traffic accidents and traffic fatalities. Do you really think that because the driver's name is not on the piece of paper in the glovebox that engaging them in a high speed pursuit will keep everyone safer?

"Fleeing vehicles are a serious problem and we should be able to do more"
Yes, they are a huge problem and we did do more. We stopped chasing them so that they would not be fleeing vehicles. You have no way of knowing how many lives have already been saved by the policy nationwide. That's why Car1'a secret "chase but don't chase" policy is so dangerous.

Since the current no chase policy has failed miserably it's time to switch to the chase policy and publicize it. If anything it will act as a preventive measure because it will make potential car thieves think twice knowing they will be chased.

Do you really think that these juveniles are afraid of spending 16 hours in youth detention? To be let out time and time again? Do you think they are fearful of having the PCSO babysitter stop by to see if they are home? The problem is not with having a no-chase policy (even if you never actually follow it), the problem lies with Bernie and Bob's BS once they actually catch one. There are no consequences at all, just like when a deputy leaves a woman to be murdered because they didn't get out of their car. It's called lack of accountability and Bob and Bernie are the best at it.

The St. Pete Mid-town religious leaders and community organizers should march against auto thefts and shootings. That will fix everything.

Hmm, I see the protected He Who Shall Not Be Named chimed in. Point is there have now been two fatal crashes in Pinellas County where Souf Side thugs joy riding in stolen cars have killed innocent people. And when you light these assholes for a simple traffic stop they flee, speed, run red lights, and jeopardize everyone’s life. And the fact is they do it when we cut them loose. And the problem isn’t that their name isn’t the same as the registered owner. The problem is they drive like maniacs and act like animals. That’s the problem. And I find it amusing that you trivialize grand theft. Easy to say when it’s not your car. Unfortunately it will take a tragedy to make a change. Like some innocent child getting flattened while he’s playing in front of his home and some hood rat wipes him out doing 100 mph in a stolen car. They do that because they know no one will chase them. They didn’t do this before, not until we advertised we won’t chase them. When they get caught by other means they even say, “you can’t do that!” Its ridiculous. That’s right you know who, animals.
