What is the difference between a lifer and an inmate with a long sentence?

Let's say one person has a life sentence and the other 40 years for the same crime. What is the difference as far as prison life goes? The lifer would be close custody for the duration, but I would assume the 40 year inmate would also be in close custody assuming it was a violent crime (i.e. murder).

The one with the "long" sentence may be able to get out and vote one day; the "lifer"... not!
