    Turn over rate is faster then ever

    We have had in the last 12 months three officers who are still on probation status quit for various reasons. One left before the academy was over as he had previously applied for a different job and they called him and offered him $10.000 more to start. They sent us someone else slated for a different office and she quit because of the BS that a couple of sups gave her and we here she is doing something in the hospital administrators field .Yet another one who had 12 months with us decided that this job sucks for the pay so he went to the local jail and he received almost $20.000. more a year. Yup 52,000 a year to work the jails . That is so sad that the department is allowing this mess. They need to step to the plate and use their resources wisely . We all know this year we will receive no raise because of the hurricane so what is the answer. How do we keep people, we don't.


    Look around your office, your circuit at how many folks will retire in the next 5 years and with no one coming or staying in the early stages we are screwed . I believe it is time we look at privatization , lets have the Sherriff take probation over and let the department use it resources for the prison . lets get on the Sherriff pay scale and hope to have a future that pays us a living wage. I think it may be the time for us to contact people and begin to talk about privatization . That the only solution I can come up with. anyone have another solution ?

    Do you support privatization or turning probation over to the Sheriff's Office. You can't do both. Privatization is not the answer because the pay will get even worse and standards will be lower. The SO will never ,ever take over probation statewide. The only way for things to change is for offices to collapse due to nobody working anymore. My office is in dire straits. We are losing two newbies in a week and we have five older officers planning on leaving in the next 6-8 months with no replacements. The situation is really bad. Me? I'm out of here is less than 9 months, this job and pay SUCK!

    Sounds like the pay is too low to retain and attract people. The only way to get more people is to offer competitive wages. One possible alternative DOC may try if it cannot increase the pay is to lower the standards just to get bodies in uniforms. But I doubt it will work and if so, only temporary. Low pay is the problem and until that gets fixed the staffing shortage will continue to get worse.

    I mean no disrespect but I think for the co side the standards are just a GED how much lower can it go. I am not sure that privatization isn't the answer. In our county the Salvation Army had MM probation and for 30 years it has been working . Reality is most of the offenders who the computer says we need to see because they are MAX we don't need to see monthly . However some MIN need to be seen but we don't.

    Perhaps the answer is private but I could make a argument for the Sheriff . They would see the ones needed to be seen with zone supervision . We were told last week in our staff meeting that as caseloads rise put more folks in IRS. They say don't supervisee , Perhaps We should give all third degree felonies to the Salvation Army and only concentrate on the other cases. The damn has to break soon and we no longer have the plugs to plug it so let it go .

    Privatization will lower standards because the pay and benefits will be lower. Even if the privatization pay will not be lower they will not have the FRS pension so that alone will save money. Depending on who wins the gubernatorial election, odds are toward increased privatization. That will cause many to abandon the DOC.

    Its going to get much worse. I have it through good info that most high ups including Secretary JOnes were supporting Gwen Graham. Now that's done. Guarantee Secretary, RD's and some CA's will be replaced right away. Lets face it they have all done a crap job anyway. However, who then is in. Answer----look in the Department who is involved politically on each side and you will have your answer. I have no doubt almost all RD's will be fired or offered positions as Specialists--Get ready the toss up is about to happen.

    Lightbulb FDC needs to pay more money if they want to stop the turnover rate!

    The idea of FDC thinking they can recruit and retain correctional officers with such a low salary with no step plan is just wishful thinking. Even detention deputies working at county jails make way more.

    FDC should follow the county jails example of having the starting salary around $45k with a step plan. But no, FDC would rather waste taxpayers money to train and certify each correctional officer just for them to jump ship for another high paying job at a sheriff county jail.

    It makes no sense but its happening on the prison side and the probation side. My office has lost five good officers in one year and replaced by two and ones in the academy and he wont be ready for months. We also have five veterans officers planning on leaving in the next 6-7 months. It will be a disaster for the office. And the powers that be will do nothing. Let it sink!
