4 on / 3 off: Thur/Fri/Sat or Sun/Mon/Tues or Tues/Wed/Thur or whatever three days off per week.
This schedule will not create a large amount of hold times on calls during shift changes. It’s only two additional hours per day and have an extra day off.
12 hr shifts (11.5 in reality): Mon/Tues/Fri/Sat/Sun (week 1) & Wed/Thur (week 2).
This schedule provides two three-day weekends (Friday/Saturday/Sunday), to everyone twice a month. And three days (consecutive) will be the longest time an officer will work. Some studies said it saves $$$$ to their budget.
Either schedule will give more family time, instead of an 8 hour shift.
