Dude please, for the love of God don't do it. It will be the biggest mistake of your life I promise. If you are doing it for the free academy then atleast ensure you have no other options (local cadet program, GI bill for a real academy etc.) There is a reason why people are forced to stay for two years. Law Enforcement is an amazing field but FHP doesn't really fall into that category. You will be "urged" to write more tickets and will have to constantly pick up the slack due to manpower issues and lazy people.

Go do a ride along with each of your local county and city departments and I promise you you'll see why this is all bs.

A person whose job is to enforce traffic laws, not investigate crimes. Not a member of the police.

Synonyms: Community service aide, meter maid.

I'll take the few noise complaints over 65ing 2 hour old crashes from the SO any day. You troopers just don't get it. Do a ride along with your local Police, you'll see.
