U.S. Federal judge takes hostages – and then shoots himself

MIAMI — Timothy Maher, 50, a disability judge at a Miami Social Security office, was arrested for domestic violence involving his girlfriend when he threatened her with a rifle.

At his initial court appearance, he cited his profession and proclaimed his innocence saying, “I ask you to consider who I am and what I do, and whether or not these charges sound like a federal judge with 10 years on the bench.” He was then jailed, but was released on bond the next day.

After he was released from jail, Maher went home and took three hostages for about 10 hours. The SWAT team surrounded his home and hostage negotiators pleaded with Maher, asking him to release the hostages, including a child. The negotiator said over a megaphone, “I know you’re a good father Tim, but she’s a 13-year-old girl and she doesn’t need to go through this.”

Communication with Maher ceased when a gunshot…
