Unions
Unions don’t fix everything but a well organized and managed union can accomplish a lot for everyone. 90 % of all departments have a step plan which helps keep despairty between a newly hired deputy/officer and well vested one. On average a 10 year officer anywhere else makes 70k and retires out at 90k to 100k regardless of rank. Staring salaries have continued to go up but nothing has been done for those still here as loyal as ever. Most agencies and companies raise everyone’s pay who is not on probationary status equal to the starting salary increase, again keeping that despirety. Here at Lcso a 20 year Deputy makes 60k, this is very sad. It has nothing to do with being disgruntled just hard to believe after risking your life for so many years that you make what a lot of blue collar workers in regular jobs make in 10 years. Yep, phone line, power line installers and basic managerial workers for fast food places or department stores make that with little risk. The benefits they praise so much are useless when you retire, your fancy equipment, take home car etc. all go away to include your insurance which decreases as you become eligible for Medicare. It’s not that great either and continues to get worse. The civilians make on average more or as much as most deputies in this agency and actually have a step plan, that’s why they go from level 1 to 2 etc. in their positions. They are on average making 35 to 40 % more then they would in the private sector. Some of the deputies are here because they truly enjoy their job, have a passion for what they do where they live so for the Moran’s that say just leave get educated in life rather then just having a good old boy mentality.

Unions don’t fix everything but can accomplish a lot for both sides. A step plan is in need and in today’s times most agencies have one. On average a 10 year Deputy/ Officer makes 70k and retires out at 90k to 100k regardless of rank. The starting pay here continues to increase but nothing is done for those who have been loyal. Again Most agencies and companies raise everyone’s pay who is not on probation equal to the new pay increase to keep that disparity. The civilians here have a step plan which is why they go from level 1 to 2 etc. in their position not to mention they are paid on average 35 to 40 % higher then what they would make in the private sector doing that job. A lot of deputies are here because they truly love and have passion for what they do in the county they work and or reside so for the Moran’s that say if you don’t like it leave get educated and lose the good old boy mentality. It’s sad to think a 20 year Deputy makes what most blue collar workers make in 10 years on the job without risking their lives. The average 20 year Deputy here makes 62k which is what a telephone lineman, power lineman or even fast food and department store manager makes in 10 years or less. As for the benefits they say are so great well the fancy equipment, take home cars and insurance which has decreased over the years all go away when you retire. The insurance too when you become eligible for Medicare.
