SPD initiated a traffic stop near Martin Luther King Way and Orange Av, but the driver, Terrance Tilley, fled south on Orange Avenue. A Sarasota deputy in the area joined the high-speed pursuit by “following” the fleeing driver, who crashed in the 1300 block of Myrtle Av. Tilley was was transported to SMH where he died of his injuries.

A Sarasota police officer initiated an “investigatory traffic stop” after observing an SUV that fit the description of a stolen car.

Tilley was “stomping on and off on their brakes,” causing the lead SPD vehicle to slow down and the deputy to pass them to avoid a crash. The deputy then led the chase and attempted to disable the SUV, but was unable to make contact.

A Sarasota police supervisor then asked if the pursuit was the police department’s responsibility or the sheriff’s. The answer is part of an investigation into the fatality.
