SOUTH FLORIDA SUN-SENTINEL
The Fort Lauderdale policeman who accidentally shot a fellow officer in September was arrested Friday in a domestic violence incident and charged with aggravated assault with a firearm, a felony, and one misdemeanor battery count, according to Broward County court records and police officials.
Fort Lauderdale Police Officer Stevens Gelu was arrested by Pembroke Pines Police Department on Friday night, booked into the county jail and released on $100,000 bond.
Fort Lauderdale police spokesman Sgt. Andy Pallen said Gelu was pulled from street patrol and put on administrative duty. Pembroke Pines police seized his guns.
The Fort Lauderdale Police Internal Affairs department will conduct its own investigation, in addition to the investigation by Pembroke Pines, Pallen said. According to the Broward Sheriff's Office, Gelu's wife told a Sheriff's Office deputy at a county courthouse where she works that in the early hours of the morning Friday, she and Gelu fought, and he hit her in the face with his handgun, causing swelling under her eye.
She "further related that her husband, Stevens Gelu, placed the handgun to the right side of her head and stated that he was 'going to [expletive] kill you'," the report states.
She didn't want to report the incident to the city because she feared Gelu would kill her, according to the report. Concerned about the woman's safety, the deputy, John Nelson Howard, reported the case to the city's Internal Affairs department.
Kimberly Gelu subsequently refused to cooperate with investigating Fort Lauderdale detectives.
Gelu is already under investigation for the shooting of Officer William McGarry on Sept 26.
Gelu had been allowed back to work after undergoing an evaluation that deemed him fit for service, Pallen said.
"He was cleared to go back to full duty," said Pallen, "and he's been on full duty for several weeks."
The department determined that Gelu, 31, accidentally shot McGarry, 49, on Sept. 26.
The city's investigation was turned over to the State Attorney's Office, Pallen said. The two responded in separated vehicles during Hurricane Jeanne to an apartment where a man was said to be yelling racist slurs and gunshots had been heard.
Gelu told internal affairs investigators he fired up to five rounds outside John Yanosik's second-floor apartment after Yanosik pointed a gun at him. One of the bullets ripped through McGarry's abdomen, slicing through his lungs and other organs. He has been in Broward General Hospital since.
The department hopes that McGarry will eventually be able to give his version.
While Gelu had only two years on the force, McGarry had 22 and was only months away from his planned retirement.
McGarry's wife, Sandy McGarry, publicly forgave Gelu shortly after the shooting.
