Paul Grohowski seems to be just what Superintendent Bowden wants- someone who is ethically and professionally weak.

Take the DUI stop by one of his officers when Grohowski was apparently the shift commander:
1) The DUI suspect (a City Attorney) was not arrested because it was "policy" for the officers to sometimes drive them home. According to the FDLE, the Port St. Lucie Police Department made 142 DUI arrests in 2012. Others got rides home. That is called Discrimination. If they knew you, you got a ride home.
2) Apparently then Lt. Grohowski actually got in the DUI suspect's car and drove her home. Where was his police car?

3) So the shift commander took himself out-of-service and away from his police car to help a DUI suspect avoid arrest? Wow!


How can Grohowski have the safety of the schools as a priority when he clearly doesn't have good judgement or public safety on his mind during what should have been a routine arrest?

The Sarasota School Board is distancing itself from Knight's systemic immorality, as follows:

• The FBI denied Sheriff Tom Knight a Top Secret security clearance, due to his immoral past. He was also arrested by Venice police officers for disorderly conduct when he got sloppy drunk and angry and emotional about a woman. He subsequently got into a violent fight. It shows his past (and present) emotional outbursts in public.

• Colonel Kurt Hoffman failed a polygraph test about stealing from multiple victims and from multiple employers. Hoffman confessed to:
  - stealing pornography from a store
  - stealing a boat from a citizen
  - stealing other things from past employers
  - stealing gasoline while working as a reserve deputy for the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office (twice).
  Knight still promoted Hoffman.

• Colonel STEVE BURN$ has left the Sarasota Sheriff's Office, but his dishonorable actions are worth noting. BURN$ had a criminal case for beating up a teenager's father who disapproved of BURN$ dating her. The battery charge was sent to the prosecutor's office. The prosecutor gave BURN$ a second chance and at the last minute, and decided not to prosecute him, but said that he might change his mind, if BURN$ committed more violence. Knight still promoted BURN$.

• Captain John Walsh was investigated for conduct unbecoming when a deputy caught Walsh in bed with his wife. Walsh denied it during an IA investigation and he got Det. Mark Macale to lie as an alibi for him. That's corruption at the highest level. Macale cracked and told the truth to the investigator - by admitting that he lied as a false alibi for Walsh - but Walsh kept lying (until the investigator told Walsh that Macale had already told the truth). Knight still promoted Walsh.

• Captain Ron Locke is another dishonorable mention, even though he has left the Sarasota Sheriff's Office. A sergeant and a deputy told Knight that Locke impregnated a 17 year old teenager. Knight refused to investigate Locke. As a result, FDLE had to investigate Locke. FDLE located the victim, but she said the incident was in the past and was too painful to recount, so she refused to testify any further.

• Captain Kevin McElyea failed a lie detector tests about sleeping with another man's wife. The husband caught McElyea. Then the husband secretly recorded McElyea discussing how to suppress evidence with his wife. The husband gave the secret recording to Knight.

• Lieutenant Dan Tutko asked a K-9 deputy to lie during a traffic stop by claiming that the dog "alerted" to drugs during a sniff. That would allow deputies to legally [sic] search the car. The deputy refused to lie for Tutko - and he reported Tutko's actions to Knight. No punishment was imposed on Tutko and the reporting-deputy was transferred out of the K9 unit as political retaliation. Knight promoted Tutko.

We can only assume that you think it is ok for a shift commander to actually drive a DUI suspect home in the DUI suspect's car because it is "department policy." Go to work for the School Board Police (if you can qualify) and you wont be able to keep up with the BS in just the first year.

We've kept up with Knight's BS, so now we're experts at it. Knight showed his true political colors when he:

• Called Shirley Brown names via text. Any idiot knows that department issued equipment is subject to a public records search, so why would Knight text insults about others? And he did it while getting paid on the taxpayers dime.
• Then Knight and Eric Robinson tried to undermine the school budget. That's about as dirty as you can get because it's the children who suffer.

The school board is making a wise decision to distance the school system from Knight's dirty political antics. SSO SROs are not the problem. Knight is the problem.

Sarasota school superintendent Dr. Todd Bowden has reached out to Sheriff Tom Knight several times since the two sat down and talked publicly, but Knight refuses to return his calls, which is hindering school security planning.

School board member Shirley Brown said, "Sheriff Knight told me that he won't talk to the superintendent because he is not ‘elected’."

When Bowden left the last public meeting with law enforcement, he called every chief to schedule a time to negotiate a contract for temporary SROs – and every agency called him back, except Knight.

Bowden said, "I considered Tom Knight a friend, someone that I had an open line of communication with and for whatever reason, that's no longer the case. I regret that. I'm trying to get on the sheriff's calendar, but he isn't calling me back. Anytime he wants to talk, I'm available."

Brown explained that Knight’s hostility toward the Sarasota school district started after the Parkland school shooting, when the Sarasota district e-mailed SRO's and asked them to make their [marked] patrol vehicles more visible on campus.

A typical Sarasota County high school parking lot at the end of the day. The drug deals are done sometimes in the morning, sometimes at the end of the day. The SRO's do a great job but can only be in one place at one time.


Now comes Mike Andreas stating that "..students have youthful behaviors, and there is a whole lot of activities that they don't need to be arrested for but might meet the criteria of a particular crime."

Just the kind of "philosophy' of the "Promise" program in the Broward County Schools. How did that work out?

Tom Knight's unwillingness to be a team player with the Sarasota School District forced them to form their own internal police department to protect the kinds. You've got to do what you've got to do.

This is the best idea yet. Give it some time. The SBPD will progress. This county is too big not to have one., Try looking at it from a positive note. Get off the Sheriff soap box. It is irrelevant and serves no purpose. The Sheriffs Office will always be their to augment and assist but in the big picture. This is a win win for the schools
