    Hire question

Would a new hire applying for the Miami Office with 4 years LE experience start at minimum salary, or a step increase?

Everyone starts at the minimum salary, except for friends of the Deputy CFO who get appointed to higher ranking positions.

Also, the state does not have step increases. You will be hired at the starting salary, and will get raises when the legislature remembers to include state law enforcement in the budget.

Which means this is a second career/retirement job to supplement your pension from your first agency. You will pretty much only see one or two negligible raises if you stay here for about ten years or so. The pay is good for what we do and the pension from here is mostly used to offset the cost of healthcare and prescriptions when you finally decide to call it quits for good...just speaking honestly from the perspective of a second LE career guy...there are a lot of us here!

State LEO slots should be your second career, not you first. Most understand that and make the position work for them. Use the job to supplement your current retirement, as previously stated. If you don't have a retirement, get one then consider working for the state until you can draw full social security. remember, there is no cost of living raise anymore. That is a big deal most don't concern themselves with until it is too late.

    Is it true?

Yes, we are State Employees and get paid once a month; it is no different than getting paid bi-weekly since you get twice as many peanuts one time. You just have to adjust your budget so that the paycheck lasts for the month. It is pretty easy once you realize that you only get one check and there is not going to be another for a whole month.

    What is the uniform/grooming policy?

The typical dress code is khakis and a polo or button up shirt. What you wear can vary depending on what you are doing from day-to-day. As far as grooming, you are allowed to have a full beard.

Save yourself and apply somewhere else. This agency is not a good place to work. You are constantly having to look over your shoulder for the knife. Morale is terrible. Lacks leadership.
