Amazon to launch facial recognition software
Orlando PD partners with Amazon to launch facial recognition software around city
Orlando law enforcement purchased facial recognition systems from Amazon, which can track and identify people as they walk down the street.
The software is called “Rekognition” and can identify “persons of interest,” be they walking down the street or spotted with a traffic camera.
“[The] City of Orlando is a launch partner of ours,” Amazon’s Ranju Das recently told a developer conference in Seoul, South Korea. “They have cameras all over the city. The authorized cameras are then streaming the data…We are a subscriber to the stream, we analyze the video in real time, search against the collection of faces they have.”
The Orlando Police Department referred to the system as “a pilot program,” insisting it would be used “in accordance with current and applicable law” and adding that it “is not using the technology in an investigative capacity or in any public spaces at this time.”
However, according to NPR, the agency didn’t specify if the program had been used that way in the past, or would be in the future.
Amazon was equally “mum” on the topic, saying only that “[W]e require our customers to comply with the law and be responsible when using Amazon Rekognition.”
The Rekognition system is reportedly quite affordable compared to previous systems, with agencies such as the Oregon-based Washington County Sheriff’s Office using it for “literally a couple of dollars a month.”
The ACLU filed public records requests for Amazon’s communications with both OPD and the WCSO.
“Activating a real-time facial recognition system, that can track people, if the technology is there, could be as simple as flipping a switch in some communities,” ACLU of Northern California member Matt Cagle said.

That's not going to work! All they have down there now are drunk and stoned millennials walking around puking on the sidewalks, not to mention the amount of homeless is comparable to San Francisco with needles and feces everywhere.

China and Russian Federation have VERY good systems in place.
They can track a person and get to them within minutes, with the possible exceptions of out in the wilderness. It wouldn't surprise me if our elected and non-elected leaders want the same thing here. As it is right now, you are filmed and tracked all day. There are cameras everywhere, Onstar and smartphones track you, your insurance company can track you if you fall for that little gizmo they have. Unless you live in the middle of Siberia, there is no such thing as disappearing anymore. Dozens of entities know what you buy, how you drive, what you read, what you eat, what pets you have and what ailments they have, how you feel about political issues etc etc. That's just how it is now.

I heard the new camera system videos will be stored on the cloud.
With all the talk about QRF crowd control and stuff, I bet FHP will be doing facial recognition behind the scenes from the videos after upload.
