    Working at PPPD

Out of State Certified looking to work down in FL. Can anyone that works or worked at pines speak to the culture there, equipment, benefits (take homes, retirement, etc), work schedule? Also, is there police work to be done there or is it a lot of civil type calls?

Culture: Some negativity in certain pockets (the same as all agencies) but overall you're treated well. The Chief has been around for a long time and takes care of his people. You don't see many getting in trouble... unless they really earned it.

Equipment: Top notch. We're fairly close to everyone driving Tahoe's that we began transitioning to a few years back. They're take home cars right off of FTO. Standard issue is Glock 34's. Nice training facility. Brand new PD being built in the next couple years.

Benefits: There is a relocation reimbursement of up to $5k. Signing bonus of $5k. City pension. The older guys have better benefits but the City is transitioning out of them because of their cost. New benefits (July I think) will be as good or a little better than the current State pension (FRS). If you get in fast (before July), you'll be calculating your top 2 years (non-consecutive, non-calendar) whereas after that, it will be top 5. I think we're at 25 years for 75% but you can work a little extra time to hit 80% if you want. There is a buy back program where you can buy prior years of service (military or police) and get some extra years in the pension. Eight year DROP program which you get market value on.

Salary: We spent a long while after the financial crisis not getting much for raises. We are getting 11% over three years in this current contract though so we may have past that hurdle. They appear to be trying to catch us up, just can't do it overnight. As more of the bigger benefit guys go out, salaries will drive up pretty consistently I believe.

Work Schedule: Four 10's. The entire road rotates days off every three months so even the most junior person has 6 months of weekends off every year. The members just got polled by the Union though and are in favor of going to a permanent days off schedule. Not sure what's gonna happen with that yet.

Work: Some police work to be done and you have time to be pro-active most days, if you choose. There are some not so great places in the City but it's by no means a ghetto. Most of our problems come from nearby jurisdictions. For being the #2 most populated City in Broward County, it's really nice actually.

Family/Off-Duty Stuff: The Charter School system locally is really good. Plenty of stuff to do with your family. Three hour drive from Orlando theme parks, approximately 20-30 minutes from the beach, Seminole Casino within 15 minutes, all four professional sports within 20-30 minutes. Traffic blows at times is the only thing. If you're from a smaller area, the people can be really nasty comparatively. Don't expect to smile at a strange and get it returned.

Housing: Super expensive. Check out home prices before you commit.

That was a really good break down. I was raised in Miami so I'm somewhat familiar with the area. Thank you for the details.

Keep this in mind though...if our retired assistant chief ever becomes Chief, you'll probably decide to look for employment elsewhere.
Good luck to you either way.

I think there’s a pretty good chance he doesn’t return.

One thing that was left out above... there’s a gym on site and one hour of each shift is afforded to those who wish to work out.
