Shortage of jailer recruits, retention crisis

The word is that very few suitable candidates are available out of hundreds of jailer applications. Those selected still have to pass the academy, state test and FTO before they can start working on their own. Jailer FTOs are not allowed to fail recruits because of staffing shortages. Sucks to be a jailer FTO placed in that no-win situation if you get stuck with a slug recruit or some arrogant know it all. Oh well, they all want to be sergeants so have to pay the price unless they are connected.

The other side is the coin is the jailer retention crisis which shows no sign of slowing down. Lots of retirements in the pipeline this summer, especially among supervisory staff. Everyone is trying to leave the Titanic while the executive staff is re-arrainging the deck chairs on the sinking ship while the band plays on. The solution to the staffing shortage will be mandatory overtime and less vacation available. All of this will increase sick time usage. All this makes the decision to leave even easier.

The beatings will continue until morale improves

Have no fear, the Colonel has the answers and will lead the way! He's a really smart guy, just ask him.

Rollins can recruit some young guys to apply. Unless there’s an sro opening at an all boys school that he can volunteer at.

Col. H is a moron who has run the jail into the ground. As a result the jail staffing shortage will get worse because the exodus is gaining momentum under his dictatorship. They can't hire enough to replace those who are bailing out in record numbers. Mandatory OT is already here and vacation reductions are coming. Plus new batches of inexperienced rookies and inexperienced deputies promoted before they are ready. If anyone is wondering what's wrong with the jail, it starts with the lousy top management. Amazing that Bob has not sent Col. H packing into retirement.

The county is not allowing the sheriff to fill SRO spots. It’s up to the school board to do it. All that hype for nothing.

    https://www.pcsb.org/SRO

A lot of younger guys who are dual certified and who got tired of waiting for a patrol job are interested in the county SRO positions. 8 hour day shifts, weekends and holidays off, Thanksgiving and winter vacations, and the summers off. Beats the heck out of the stupid 12s at the jail with rotating days off and hardly any time available on the vacation calendars due to the staffing shortage. The jail management had better re-think the 12s if they want to retain and recruit people.
