North port is a small town with a small town police department. What is the biggest building in North Port? Wal Mart?
Of all the agencies in Sarasota and Manatee counties only Longboat Key has a lower crime rate than North Port. Even Venice has a higher crime rate than North Port.

North Port, Venice and Longboat Key cannot justify the amount of money that they spend on their police departments with so little activity. The good officers that try to do their jobs are rightly frustrated.

Younger officers should get out while they can.

SO, I just started reading some of the NP PD threads. I live in NP but work in another part of the state. Am not really up to speed on all issues with the PD but was surprised to see all the candidates rejected, am also surprised that the city administrator used to be an assistant finance guy....hmmm no else in the state qualified? NP is an interesting place mostly blue collar with retirees a few folks with $$ mostly in Heron Creek and Bobcat i have lived here for several years but guess I need to start paying attention. Have seen few commission mtgs online and am appalled by the lack of professionalism by most of them-but that s what we get for 29k a year....interesting how all the meetings are during the day when most cannot attend and even more cannot run if we have a real job...

City Manager Lear was the Finance Manager when he was selected to be the acting Interim. He has done a good job of keeping the City rolling in a year of much change and turmoil internally. Many of us were sorely disappointed that a Chief was not selected in the first set.

Day vs Night meetings: We have gotten better with rotating between day and night meetings. I think they have to have a second reading in the opposite meeting as the first reading. So if XYZ Ordinance first reading is in a day meeting, then the second reading has to be at a night meeting.

Commission salaries: The role is considered a part time job and I think the salary reflects that. For the Commissioners who are doing their homework and attending even a few events, they are putting 40+ hours in each week so that reduces the candidate pool. There is an increase after this election. I think the new salary will be around $40K. I like the idea of tying thir salary to the Median income. Commissioners salaraies aping the average citizen but it still wont allow for those currently working fulltime to run.

Also, what are your sources? The crime rate's difference between Venice and North Port is insignificant.

North Port has a population of approximately 60,000. Venice 22,000 and it is growing. The Sheriff's Office already sends Deputies to work crashes on I75 because FHP is way too short on Troopers, they would have a hard time with North Port and Venice.
So, what's your solution exactly? Less money for NPPD? Which may lead to less recruiting, less training, equipment issues, more Officers leaving for another agency...And then, when SHTF in peaceful NP you'll change your mind again.

NPPD is an outstanding agency, especially for younger officers.

If you look in the far right corner of the FDLE document, please note that NPPD has the best "clearance rate" in Sarasota County. No other agency comes close. It's the clearance rate that determines how good or crappy an agency is.

NPPD is not such a great agency for younger or older officers, just look at the turnover rate in the last year alone (28). Both the Chief and asst Chief gone in one week, not that I am complaining. It is commonly known that the books are cooked here to keep the reportable crimes down, so lets not pat ourselves on the back. In regards to our case solving ability, fair, better than some agencies but fair and that's generous. Let us not start fabricating just how wonderful this place is, has been for some time a cesspool, good officers gone, a$$ kissers run rampant. Pay sucks and if the fireman's steps are any indications of what is to become, well that sucks to. Nothing is going to change here because of who left, so lets face reality and move on. We have our share of serious incidents, not like Ft Myers but we are headed in that direction. No manpower, no fair compensation and no competent leadership makes us a prime area for crime to set up shop and fi you are out here look around it already has started and we are in no way prepared for it.
