MCM Construction ties to local politicians and the FIU bridge

Interesting article about how palms get greased in this county. MCM Construction ties to Gimenez, Diaz Ballart, Rubio, etc., explains a desire by politicians to award multi million dollar contracts to MCM perhaps bypassing safety standards. The cover up is now in full swing to pass blame elsewhere. Hopefully the feds will hold MCM accountable for this tragedy.

2000 years ago the Romans built bridges and moved armies for a mile on bridges made over open water. In this county we can’t even build a 200 ft bridge to get kids safely across from one side of the road to the other. All around this country you have examples of great engineering feats, yet in this third world county a politically connected company builds a shoddy bridge that kills eight people. Only in Miami.

The pedestrian overpass at SW 35th Street and SR 826 has been there for decades, 42 years that I know, and yet it remains, providing safe pedestrian movement east and west bound over SR 826. No it is not fancy but it has served its intended purpose. So has the one at Red Road (NW 57th Avenue or Hialeah's West 4th Avenue) over South Okeechobee Road and the Miami Canal; it has been there, that I know, since 1967!

Doubtless civil engineering technology has advanced ten-fold since the above cited years and yet MCM cannot provide a product that is safe and worst, it did not engage precautionary measures to ensure traffic was blocked and redirected on SW 8th Street before the stress test began. Was there off-duty Law Enforcement employed at the bridge before it collapsed? If so, what direction did the MCM person in charge of stress testing the bridge gave them regarding traffic flowing under the -- yet to be tested -- bridge?

We hope this tragic accident serves as a lesson for future bridges built in Miami-Dade. Moral? Before stress testing begins, Law Enforcement must exercise leadership, stopping traffic from flowing under the -- yet to be tested structure -- and redirecting it away from potential harm. Commonsense, no?
