This is really a moral question and a gut-check if we are going to be honest with ourselves. We have no legal responsibility, per the US Supreme Court, to answer any calls for service that we determine are just not worth it. Regardless, I just could not stand idly by while someone lays waste to innocents, even if that means I lose my life in the process. Anecdotally, I do not even care for most of the students around here, but that is immaterial. Further, I know my job well and do not need the admin to give me guidance on how or whether I can do something.

I do not know how any cop, on or off-duty could listen to an active shooter situation and not instinctively move to stop the threat. Heck, even two guys from a non-jurisdictional SWAT team that were training close by headed over to confront the shooter and took the suspension. Who cares, suspend or fire me, I can get another job; what I could not do is sleep soundly knowing that I did nothing to thwart the violence. I am a Sheepdog!

Well said. We have been provided with the equipment and the training here to react in a proactive way. I know the Chief is also working on getting our radios to be able to communicate in the buildings. We have the support and I a have no doubt our officers would respond in the best way.

I regularly practice with my weapons, I make sure they are well maintained, I take our range training seriously. As much as I know that Im ready to act if called upon to stop a violent situation, I'd rather be home and unaware of an active shooting because I dont trust most of the people in charge.

My career, my familys financial protection and my freedom will be in danger because we will be judged by people who should not hold the high ranks that they do much less be in todays type of Law Enforcement.
