The road to reclaim our MDPD

As long as the strong mayor format of government remains in place in Miami Dade County our department will continue to exist as a private security guard department for our current mayor.
Today, our director and his staff are unable to make a single major decision without consulting the mayor. Our director lives in constant fear of being sacked on any given day and over any minor incident.
Here is the news, it will not get any better beyond 2020. Right now, our mayor is grooming Commissioner Esteban Bovo to be our next mayor. Bovo will be even worse than Gimenez. He is anti police and anti public service employee. He will continue to drive our department to the ground if elected.
The number one job for the PBA should be to find commissioners who are willing to draft and present a new ordinance to the voters to revoke the strong mayor format of government. Unless this happens, we will continue to suffer with puppet directors and corrupt politicians that use our department to protect themselves from indictment. Unless this strong mayor format is revoked we will have no authority and our wages and retirement benefits will continue to suffer. The PBA should take up this torch and run with it.

With Stahl at the helm??? Nice dreaming but it ain't going to happen. He's afraid of his own shadow. He won't buck the system.

The number one job for the PBA should be push the elected sheriff. I know there is good with bad but that is truly the only way to get away from the strong mayor, commission idiots, and the rest of the county departments that suck us dry like ITD, GSA, etc. They will have better luck with that than try8ng to get ordinances changed or anything else thru that clown court downtown.

An elected sheriff format is also a better option than what we have now but we should explore all avenues. For those who were not here in the '90s, back then we were left alone to run our department by the county managers and our wages and retirement benefits were much more safeguarded than now. The coming of our sawtooth strong mayor did away with all that. Let us not forget that it was Carlos Alvarez and his pet Chief of Staff Dennis Morales who saddled us with that strong mayor system. From that time forward our independence has shrunk tenfold.

Oh just quit already. All this complaining my god. How miserable you have to be to come on a forum and anonymously talk crap about people.

If you dislike it so much, leave! No one is forcing you to stay. Go do something else that makes you happy!

Look troll. This is a site for cops. MDPD cops. Sincerely doubt you are one of us. Here we discuss issues that concern us and ways in which we can improve our department.
So far everyone who has come on here has contributed in their own way, then we get the likes of you talking crap out of your arse and getting involved. If you dislike our discussion, go join another site and mind your own business. If you don't like negative comments about the director or the mayor you are in the minority.

    Sheriff FACT

So I would like to insert some facts about what an elected Sheriff would look like. Sheriff Gimenez or Sheriff Juan Perez. That’s EXACTLY what you would get. How do you ask? They have already said so. Guess what? Either one would without QUESTION, win and win BIG TIME. WHY? Because although you people think that these people are disliked, the PUBLIC and the VOTING population would VOTE either one in a landslide. Look beyond theee two, after they run and win, they would look for bigger public office and NOW you are left with who???? Some civilian backed by God knows which socially suppressed voting block at the time. Vote on my friends, doesn’t affect me.

It obviously affects you when you come here claiming the world according to you. Heck, if we used your logic the Brits would still own us and the Nazis would have completed their plan. We can't foretell the future but we sure as heck know this department it is not working properly and we need to fight it. Inertia will only make it worse. There are pro law enforcement candidates out there who care very little about Gimenez and Perez who would point out their comedy of errrors in a political campaign and clean their clocks so take it easy.

If you start from the premise that we took an oath to protect life and property when we signed on for this job, then it all becomes simple. How then can you stand by and work in a corruption infested environment and not do something about it to change it?
This department has been torn from top to bottom. We have a director in place who colluded with our mayor to cover up his widely reported absentee ballot fraud in 2012. This quid pro quo was simple, "make this AB ballot investigation go away and I will make you director". That was the deal betwen the mayor and our director. We were sold out by Perez and everything that has happened to the department since is a direct result of that illicit action.
Today's MDPD is not independent. Managent is not free to determine what units will be maintained or formed to stop crime. The whole system is based on ensuring we do not upset the African American community while any hard working individual who does not follow along gets kicked off the farm.
Removing the strong mayor format by vote or by creating an elected sheriff may not be the best answer but it will be better off than what we have now. If you sit around and do nothing you can forget about ever getting a raise again and your benefits will continue to diminish. So far we have been "lucky". The economy is thriving and the corrupt mayor has left us alone. The moment this economy goes south again we will be the first to be sacrificed.
