The City of Miami is looking for an architect to design a new police headquarters building for a “global city.”

Only experienced architects need apply.

The new building must be iconic, state of the art, and a landmark “that is instantaneously synonymous with Miami, much like the Empire State Building is synonymous with New York City.” Miami is “committed to iconic architecture,” according to a Request For Qualifications issued last week. The Architectural/Engineering team must have experience “designing landmark facilities that are innovative and stand the test of time.”

The facilities are to include a museum and gift shop, helipad, healthy meal options, and state-of-the-art fitness/wellness rooms. The overall design should focus on officer wellness, including ample indoor light, and outdoor spaces.

A synthesis of materials are expected to be used in the design, forming an aesthetically pleasing balance of concrete, glass, wood, stone, metal, green space, and water.

A pre-proposal conference is November 28, with bids due January 9.

All Aboard Florida has previously expressed interest in bidding to develop the property.

the current HQ, which city officials say is outdated and obsolete:

This says all you need to know about the city.

They’ll spend money on a police station but won’t spend money on public transit.

City of Miami has nothing to do with the public transit in the city. Blame that on the County.

that would be a waste of money as there is already a plan to extend the metrorail in that direction. The city should focus on creating world class parks and preventing crime in downtown. Let the county worry about those capital extensive projects as it should. The city of miami has bigger issues within its city limits that it needs to worry about.

But, as always the City should be advocating for and partnering on public transit. Just not the sole provider of public transit projects.

Yet somehow spending hundreds of millions for a police office building is a priority?

Both responses are incorrect re public transit. The city of Miami operates public transit in the form of multiple trolley routes within the city. These trolleys are funded from a portion the 1/2 penny sales surtax….via PTP (Peoples Transportation Plan) Of the total amount collected each year, about 30 Miami-Dade municipalities receive 20% than can be spent on eligible public transit and transportation projects. The county operates about 90 bus routes throughout. MetroRail and MetroMover are run by the County.

the optimist in me is excited and cannot wait to see what designs come about.
the pessimist in me knows full well that any and all proposals will be severely over budget, and, in the end, the police will get a vastly watered down version.

Save our parks
Save our parks
Please. Do not build a Police HQ in a park. Do not covet land currently covered in grass and used by children. Please keep the budget at $20 Million, NOT $120 Million. Taxpayers are fed up.

Poor guys. With all the money they make they still can’t afford a “healthy meal.”

I guess that’s why they’re constantly eating donuts.
