Thumbs up Knight's NEW office v. NO new jail

When is the media going to do an article on the NEW administrative office that Knight moved into -- and which we didn't need? (regardless of the baloney Knight may say).

Building a new fleet-center for vehicle maintenance and storage was needed, but again, Knight did not need new administrative office space. What we had was entirely sufficient and we had a lot of open space that was not being used. Someone should have taken pics as proof showing the unused space.

    • We need a new jail.
    • We need new and innovative planning for a new jail.
    • The Sarasota County commissioners need to be told that they need to begin strategic planning for (1) funding sources to build a new jail and (2) to find land to build it on.
    • None of this is happening.
    • Absentia

But at least Knight has a brand new administrative office that we didn't need (regardless of the malarkey he says).

Let's say it again one more time: Sarasota County needs strategic planning to build and locate a new jail (and not a new administrative office for Knight and his politically appointed lackeys).

In the long run, Sarasota County tax payers will suffer for Knight's incompetent negligence in this area. Planning for and building a jail is not like opening a box of Cheerios and adding milk (instant gratification). It takes strategic planning to build a jail and to develop funding for it.

Who are you kidding A new headquarters has been needed for years. Unfortunately it still cannot house the entire infrastructure so they will have to build next to it. As for the jail...Waaaah put some cots down. Its a revolving door. Get the sentenced off to prison. Start a Road Gang and make the sentenced work. Getting out of downtown has been a long time coming. He did good on this one....

Fine. Where’s is your plan for it? Would you like to line the hallway at the new HQ with prisoner’s cots? It takes planning, unless you want to violate accreditation standards, which we pay big bucks to achieve.

    • Knight absorbed Sarasota County’s road gang into the SSO
    • and took the money/budget for it
    • and then disbanded it.
    • Soooo now Knight gets the budget/money for the road gang, but we no longer have a road gang.

BTW why do you want to reinstate what Knight disbanded? Do you think you know more than Knight? Of course you do. lol

The Orange County sheriff did exactly that. The jail now falls under the Orange County commissioners to run and the Orange County sheriff has absolutely nothing to do with it.

    You need FL civics class

BCC decides who runs jail ( Sheriff, County, Private, etc ). BCC also builds and maintains the jail

Kevin McElyea graduated from the "Adult Leadership Program" (civics) and Tim Enos is attending next year. Here is the 2018 civics roster:

I think you should go check up on your laws. The county might own the building but they do not dictate who runs it. The Sheriff by Statute is responsible for the Law Enforcement,Civil,Corrections and Animal Services in each county of the State of Florida. The Sheriff may choose to give it up and make the county run it. Orange County SO got rid of it years ago.

What statute covers it? I think (?) that in Florida, the only thing a sheriff statutorily must provide is civil. Everything else is optional. It varies from state-to-state.

FSS 30.15 stipulates the statutory duties and obligations of a Florida sheriff. You can read it by clicking here or here is the full link:

(scroll about halfway down the page until you see 30.15)
