Rookie police officer on way home stops a stabbing and kills suspect, cops say

A rookie Miami police officer fatally shot a man stabbing a woman in Miami Lakes on Sunday morning, according to the head of the local police union.

Javier Ortiz, president of Miami Fraternal Order of Police, said the officer heading home from work saw a woman being stabbed near Miami Lakes Middle School, 6425 Miami Lakeway North.

Ortiz said the officer will be put on desk duty during the investigation.

“On behalf of the FOP, there is no doubt in our mind that when the investigation is completed, this officer will be declared a hero,” Ortiz said. “If it wasn't for the swift actions of this officer, we would not only have had just one homicide here, we would've had a victim that would've been tragically injured

The woman was taken by helicopter to Ryder Trauma Center by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

Walter Villereal, who lives in a nearby apartment complex, said he saw the start of the confrontation between the officer, the stabber and the woman being stabbed.

Villereal said he saw and heard the officer repeatedly say “Get Out!” as he stood outside a pickup truck with the couple inside.

Villereal said the officer backed up his command by breaking a truck window. The man exited the truck with knife raised.

Villereal said that's when he turned to head away, but heard seven shots. He said he later saw the woman with cuts, including a large one near the right side of her throat.

Miami-Dade police will investigate the incident and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the shooting.

Obviously you have never engaged a violent person doing extreme harm to another person. When you do, one goes into life saving mode, your life first, the victimized person's second and the most expeditious alternative; usually counted in seconds to end the imminent, violent, life threatening situation. Turning on your lapel camera may not be a factor in that immediate equation. The facts and evidence in this case will substantiate whether this officer acted within the intent, letter and spirit of the law. For now, let us thank God that he is alive and was at the right place and time to save a life!
