These type of things were started long before JP took charge. It is a sign of the times, the loss of any professionalism caused by Affirmative Action promotions. None of these things will change with an elected sheriff; actually, they may become much worse and the sheriff will be seeking re election and will be directly courting the ghetto criminal crowds.
All I have been trying to say is that you need to be careful not to throw the baby out with the bath water over a hysterical over reaction or political manipulation.

Let's put the asinine belief that MDPD is fined by FDLE for its Brown Uniforms to rest, shall we. It is not. The only statutory requirement for Sheriff's Green and White Colors are codified in Florida Statute, Section 30.46 and there MDPD is in compliance, in both the fleet and badges. Take a look at your badges; thereupon, superimposed upon our glorious badge is the Sheriff Five Point Star, surrounded by the identifiers Sheriff's Office, Dade County FLA with the adjective DEPUTY SHERIFF above and below Florida's map.

While you are correct regarding no fine, you are way off base about the elected sheriff. The best thing that could happen to mdpd is elected sheriff. An elected sheriff goes to the commission once a year and says I need X for me budget. They either fund it or not. If not the sheriff can go directly to the people and tell them that the commission is not funding and he will not be able to adequately protect them without. That in turn, puts pressure to fund. Sheriff never had to go back or get anything approved regarding spending because he is autonomous. He never had to go to gsa to get cars or ITD fit technology. All is done in house. The sheriff is not beholden to the mayor. It is true that he could be a civilian, but I doubt no matter what it would not be as bad as it is now.

Those that know the true history of the department know that the elected sheriff brought organized crime into the dept. the better option would be to get rid of the strong mayor so that the director is chosen by the commission. He had more autonomy under that structure than he does now and the politics were less intrusive then than they are now. No system is perfect but of the 3 that Dade has had, that was the best.

After the scandals of corruption with our last elected sheriff, the county commission brought E. Wilson Purdi to head the "Metropolitan Public Safety Department". Bud Purdi was a visionary and created an internationally recognized first class law enforcement agency. Bud's demise came when he went after the same politicians that had put him in that position and this department has bee going down hill every sense.
This county would be well served to bring in an outside change agent with no ties to the present command staff and given the authority to make the necessary changes to re-professionalize this department. Years of internal Affirmative Action promotions have created a crust of useless managers that hamper any chance of progress.
Time to drain the swamp.

Do you really believe there wouldn't be paybacks for working on elections, big campaign donations, etc. We just need a good competent Director that keeps downtown at bay. The worst thing that has happened over the last 30 years is Alvarez using his political machine to pass a strong mayor form of government.
