How much longer before we tackle our department's real problem?
The FTO program & a lack of leadership from supervisors is our biggest issue. Yet we have gone several years now avoiding this problem, praying it fixes itself. Well guess what? It's gotten a lot worse! Why haven't we addressed this issue?

Not until there is a defining and unifying leadership concept originating from the director and dutifully executed by the assistant director for police services, division chiefs and district majors. Unless, of course, Miami Dade County voters finally decide to vote for joining the rest of Florida's 66 counties, by choosing to elect a sheriff, pray the next elected strong mayor brings and is committed to a strong public safety vision.

Where did he/she discredit the message? Our department will never be detached from politics as long as a strong mayor plays top cop in the county by choosing our director and controling investigations from behind the scenes. An elected sheriff will have to enforce the law or lose reelection. Our current director cannot make a single decision without consulting with our mayor. Nothing can be worse than that.

No, I did not, for it it our reality. One option, and it is an unlikely one, as the current political class will obstruct it, is having voters promote a Miami Dade County Charter Review initiative, demanding the elected Sheriff question be put on the ballot for voters' approval or not and if approved the eventual scheduled at the next election to elect the first Sheriff since 1967.
The others is the hope and hope's spring is eternal, that unlike Gimenez, the next strong mayor will bring a commitment to effective policing. This is not new, Alex Penelas (though not a strong mayor per se) did it upon getting sworn in, directing the county manager and MDPD to plan and executed "Clean Sweep, Safe Streets." That was 20 years ago!

There is no fine, we are under Home Rule and exempt from those regulations.
Why is it that people keep posting crap that they know nothing about?
Be careful what you wish for and look around you.
Do you want to end up with another Ken Jenne? Remember that you don't have to be a LEO to run and be elected Sheriff.
This will open up the proverbial Pandora's Box and the people promoting this idea are political opportunists.
