Seriously, this sounds like another excuse for the state to hire $60,000 or more employees to sit around and punch out numbers. We don't need people to "counsel" you on a decision to promote, that's a crock of S***. Promote, take test. Don't promote, don't take test. I guess the state needs to hire a specialist in this topic too, because it took some freakin pencil pusher making close to six figures to tell me what intersections crashes where going to be at....bull. At least they make fancy pictures.

Honestly, it's pretty disturbing you can sit a group of "educated" individuals around a table to discuss a pretty simple topic, pay raises, retention and they can't even come to a solution. Hell, I could walk into a high school math class and by the end of the day they would have a solution.

However, let's just look at this in a professional manner. You have over 100 police agencies in the state of Florida. Most have a step plan, and it works to retain officers. Why not mock that system but adjust the increases to fit within the allotted budget..instead you guys some up with some voodoo scenarios that makes no since and require people to jump through hoops to get a raise that no one can agree one 👎😞
I'm a Master Patrolman with a large city PD. Don't mean to beat up on you guys or your agency but a trooper friend of mine told me that for all the stripes the regular Trooper's wear (excluding corporal and sergeant) you guys don't get a pay raise. Is that true? And if so why do you even wear the stripes if there's no incentive? As a Master Patrolman I make a little over $100 K a year. Not bragging but that's what my stripe's have done for me. Yes I have had to get additional training to wear them but again I just find it hard to believe you guys wouldn't get anything extra in pay yet your agency wants you to wear extra stripes . . .why?

This is true. It is also the reason I refuse to wear trooper stripes or go by the extra title.

Long report from National Conference of State
Legislatures, but it breaks down budget sources from the county's different states patrols.

    http://www.ncsl.org/Portals/1/Docume...g_2015_f02.pdf

State Highway Patrol Funding: Fiscal Year 2015” presents the findings from NCSL’s survey of state highway patrol fiscal officers, legislative fiscal offices and executive budget staff on the structure of state highway patrol funding and expenditure information for fiscal year 2015. It includes information on 49 states. Hawaii does not have a state level highway patrol. These functions are funded and performed at a county level, generally broken down by island.

-Twenty-five states use state highway fund dollars to fund the state highway patrol.

-Forty states use general fund monies to fund the state highway patrol.

-Seventeen states have considered legislation or state action to address state highway patrol funding in the past 10 years. Of these states, 14 considered an alternative or new funding source for the state patrol.

-Thirty-five states use a special fund or a dedicated revenue source to fund a portion of state highway patrol functions.

-Eleven states currently impose caps or rules limiting funding that can be received by the state highway patrol.

Florida has long been the place where old people come to retire. All the old people are all on a fixed budget and can't stand the thought of a raise on taxes and will always vote republican on that notion. Republicans continue to make the promise and follow through. Florida state employees will be and will always be the bottom of the barrel for pay because of this. This is why they keep telling everyone things like "we have the best equipment" or "we're the most elite law enforcement agency in the state". Not blaming them. People are not going to get on a sinking ship if they know it's sinking.

That's crap, we really do have the best equipment compared to higher paid agencies in the state. We have a little laptop that flips and folds that costs 10k a unit, then they have the audacity to say "Sorry we don't enough money to pay you a decent wage." I'd rather carry less crap and keep my Crown Vic longer if that means I'll be able to put more food on the table. They have extra money to shove trackers in our cars but not to fund step plan. They have money to burn on a Pursuit Track but not pay a Cost of Living Allowance. See what they don't understand in that creampuff palace they live in is that inflation goes up that 33k goes down. They don't understand because it doesn't concern them. They'll keep pumping out recruit classes and paying for it, and now the executive director is asking for the 2 year commitment to be extended a year to stem the loss of personnel. We might have the best equipment, the sharpest uniforms, the nicest cars etc, but off-duty we live in the worst neighborhoods, the smallest homes, drive crap cars, and work extra details to keep the family afloat. All while those pencil-necks in Tallahassee fan themselves and and give themselves raises. It has nothing to do with Republicans or Democrats it has to do with the Agency. FWC got their people a raise because they don't answer to a group of civilians more fixated on customer service than enforcing the law.

This is reality of being a Trooper, most put the uniform on knowing they aren't going live comfortably but still believe in the Agency. The worst thing to ever happen to FHP was DHSMV.

Not all but alot has to do with republicans. If they are on term limits and all think the same. Every two to four year you get people who are republican that hate taxes and government. So your statement spoken like a true republican. Save your party not state employees.

Dude you really need to look around at some of the better equipped agencies in the state. Your cars are terrible most agencies will deadline a vehicle at 100-120K.

    You still dont carry ASP's

You carry 40 year old surplus rifles

    You radios are terrible

Your lighting equipment in cars is terrible

    The air cards never work?

Where is this wonderful equipment you refer to? The list goes on and on on the crap they give us..

Not every agency has mobile WIFI units, nor do they have Tasers, ASR and batons, rapid IDs. Look a Metro-Dade, most of their units are still crown vics and V6 Chargers. I'm not talking about a small county where deputies make the same or less than troopers I'm talking south florida.

And to the above poster, tell me about the time Lawton Chiles (A Democrat) torpedoed the original step plan.

Who in south FL doesnt carry Tasers, or ASP's? And by WIFI do you mean AirCards? There isnt an agency in south FL that I know of who doesnt have Mobile Data Computers MDT's.

FHP still has a ton of crappy VICS running around too so whats your point on that one? V6 Chargers so what?? You guys cant go over 80 without a D number being pulled, nor do you actually chase for anything.. So who cares how fast your car is..

I am not comparing FHP to a 5 man PD. I am comparing them to SO's and PD's with atleast 100 officers.

FHP's equipment is crap and most agencies have the same if not better equipment than FHP. Dont let them sucker you into that one.

FHP's Fleet as a whole is JUNK look around.

But by all means if a few little toys keeps you making $33,xxx per year then by all means stay!!!
