Gi-menez ... guess you don't know him from his days at the city of Miami Fire Department. Gi-menez, as he pronounces his surname, is an Anglo want to be, whom HATES cops and only cares for fire fighters.

When he was at the City of Miami, the Fire Department took care of it's Firefighters whom got hurt on duty, and F*&^% the cops whom got hurt on duty.

Once he loses the County Mayoral election, Miami can have Gimenez back; after all he did such a great job for the city, right? For starters, Gimenez was the architect of the infamous Miami Fire Fee. A taxing scheme he knew or should have known had already been declared unconstitutional, by Florida’s First District Court of Appeal. Second; under Carollo’s protection and the then in effect State of Florida oversight board, Miami taxes were increased. Anyone can be a “good manager” under such conditions, no? Thirdly and directly related to MPD, Gimenez ignored Raul Martinez’ many failings, the principal reason why, as soon as he took office, Manny Diaz fired him and brought in Joe Arriola and John F. Timoney.

Miami Dade's governmental model is completely different than Miami’s. First, Miami Dade is not in fiscal jeopardy, as was Miami when Tomas Regalado became mayor. Second, when Raquel Regalado surrounds herself with professionals that complement her; primarily in public safety, it will be a plus for practitioners in that discipline. Why; how? Under the County’s Charter, the mayor is Miami Dade County’s de facto Sheriff. As such Raquel can under Florida Statute, Chapter 30, Section 30.49 Budgets, (see below link) departments under the Sheriff’s orbit submit an omnibus, distinct and separate budget to the Board of County Commission. Should the Board take legislative action beyond what Section 30.49 permits, Regalado, as Miami Dade County de facto Sheriff can appeal the Board’s decision to the “Executive Office of the Governor.” Questions? Public Safety is government's first priority and one would be surprised to see County Commissioners challenging logical, prudent Public Safety expenditures requested by Miami Dade’s de facto Sheriff.

Gimenez could have done it, splitting the County budget into two distinct budgets, one for Public Safety and the other for the rest of County. But no, he ignored his statutory authority under Chapter 30 and Public Safety has suffered under his mismanagement. Though a former Miami firefighter, Gimenez is not concerned with Public Safety, his track record as County mayor proves it. In Miami Dade, who in his right mind would dry-dock’ fire boats, threaten to close fire stations, lay off police officers and decimate the police department. For Gimenez what counts are soccer stadium, bailing out private rich and famous museum, helping the Dolphins with tax dispensations and facilitating the building of a monstrous mega mall at 186 Street and I-75. Even with the ZIKA outbreak, Gimenez was a day late and dollars short; he even had the temerity to blame the City of Miami for facilitating mosquito breeding conditions. When the fact Miami Dade is the governmental entity responsible for mosquito control.

In closing, Miami Dade will be well served electing a person with commitment and potential to effectively serve, rather than re-electing a proven failure!

You people need to recognize the fact the county has a strong mayor form of government therefore Raquelita's ineptitude would be magnified because there would be no checks and balances like her daddy has to deal with here in the city. True enough Gimenez has been a miserable mayor, but he's just a little more prepared for the job. This is a case of sticking with the evil you know rather than the evil you don't know. Like the previous poster said Raquelita can't balance her household checkbook, why give her the county's huge checkbook. She will be a mirror image of her Daddy, you can see his track record.

BTW, genius, neither Gimenez now, nor Regalado, if elected, actually manage the County's 7 Billion budget. Director Jennifer Moon and her staff do. Generally based on previous Fiscal Year's budgetary demands, anticipated forthcoming Fiscal Year expenditures, adjusted for inflation, cost of living, projected income from various County revenue streams. The County Strong mayor outlines a 'macro' vision for the budgetary proposal, pursuant to departmental directors' budget requests; Director Moon coalesces the departments' requests and constructs the proposed budget for Commissioners review and approval.
