More payoffs for the republican governor and legislators

By Katrina vanden Heuvel August 23 at 8:01 AM

Last week, the Justice Department announced that it was directing the Bureau of Prisons to stop using private contractors to run federal prisons, phasing them out as contracts expire over the next five years.

Federal private prisons are a small part of the prison-industrial complex, because most private prisons are at the state and local level. But the Justice Department’s announcement may mark the beginning of the end of what has been a miserable failure of privatization. The stock prices of the two leading private prison companies — the Corrections Corporation of America and the Geo Group — cratered on the news

THIS IS ONLY A PARTIAL FROM THE SUN SENTINEL YESTERDAY. SEEMS TO BE ONLY FLA PAPER THAT PICKED UP ON IT. NOTICE MARCO RUBIO BENEFITS FROM GEO MONEY. AND AS ALWAYS THE LAST PARAGRAPH!!!

Expect private prison companies – whose stock took a hit after the Justice Department's announcement – to try to pick apart the OIG's report. Geo, for example, already had complained that the inmate populations in the prisons it runs for the feds were different from the inmate populations in the federally run prisons used for comparison. A higher incidence of gang-affiliated inmates, the official speculates, could have made Geo's results look worse.

If the private prison companies want to make fact-based arguments, that's a legitimate source of debate. The danger is that lobbying and campaign contributions will substitute for facts. Of possible interest: The Tampa Bay Times reports that Sen. Marco Rubio, R-FL, has received considerable financial support from Geo. Rubio told the newspaper he hadn't yet read the critical report.

In any case, political clout shouldn't be the deciding factor at the federal level or at the state level, where privately run prisons also deserve to be under serious review.

The Florida Department of Corrections told a Sun Sentinel reporter the department will be "thoroughly reviewing" the OIG report. That's great, but along the way the Florida Legislature also needs to thoroughly review its decisions to use private prisons in this

Sounds just like the family criminal organization called the Clinton Foundation. You know, pay to play!

Why obey the law? Obama and Hillary sure as hell don't. Obama gives BILLIONS of our money to our sworn enemy and nobody gives a damn. Hillary sells favors to foreign country for "contributions" to the Clinton Crime Foundation and nobody cares. Private prisons in Florida are greasing Scott and nobody cares. The country is dying!

I bet Hillary would yell at you if it was not her nap time. She needs all the beauty rest she can get. Now, we don't want her to faint. That would not look good. Oh wait, that has already happened. Then her security detail stuffed her into the van like a inmate being thrown into a cell. Makes you wonder if they are just preparing her for future acts. LOL
