To be fair your SRT isn't even close to a swat team. You guys don't have negotiations or eod and you lack much of the very basic equipment that makes a swat team. You have some guys with entry vests and long rifles.

No support from the legislators
Most of the troopers come from a military background. They joined FHP because they want to continue serving. We go through a very tough military style training for 27 weeks (at least most of us that went to the old academy). OPD, the SO and other agencies get their people from Valencia Community College or steal the best we have (not always). These agencies don't want to give up power in whatever jurisdiction they have. It's not that we don't do the training, it's your agency that don,t want us to! Their greatest fear (and your perhaps) is that FHP becomes a State Police. So never mind what's best to keep the citizens safe and let's keep FHP where they are.
After 911, all federal agencies were forced to come together under one agency, DHS. It's time for Florida to do the same before it's too late! Any decent trooper would not have resitated to go inside that club. To my fellow troopers I say, stay safe and no matter how these agencies or our own supervision puts down, do your job and do it well.
Semper fi!

Which is why it's probably a good thing that we didn't respond. If you think that we were the best agency to respond and handle this, you are completely delusional. We don't have the equipment or the personnel to handle something like this. Now, would I have liked to have seen our road units respond to help with the evacuation of the wounded and help secure the perimeter? Absolutely! We have all been through active shooter training but once this transitioned from an active shooter event to a hostage situation, that completely changed the dynamics and we don't have the capability to deal with a hostage situation.

Misguided fools
To read this is painful, we all work together with one mission in mind. Public safety and the safety of our own. No matter who you are or what agency you work for we have policy's we have to follow like it or not. To think that FHP or any agency would purposely not respond is ridiculous. Things happen, we are all human mistakes are made by all of us everyday but we fix them and move on. Let's for once and for all get it together and stop pointing fingers and come together as one ( like it use to be years ago) so we can all go home at the end of our shift. I challenge all of you to stop being selfish and stop out with those blue and red lights flashing and ask if that LEO is ok instead of just driving by. We are quick to call repeat "The thin blue line" well let's all actually honor that! Old salty guy out! Bring back the 80's when we were all one!
