    Minimum Staffing -new contract PBA

    A lot of police departments here in south Florida have minimum staffing. Officers don't have to go out working without backup. But Miami Dade PD doesn't have minimum staffing in their contract. Why? Does the union ever fight for it?

    Would Mayor Gimenez have been able to let so many officers leave without replacing them if there was minimum staffing on the contract? Would it make any sense for him to threaten layoffs to save money? No! Because if minimum staffing was in the contract, the department would have to offer overtime to the other officers to properly patrol ALL shifts, and that would cost big bucks. So he would either have to keep enough cops employed, or pay out big overtime.

    So instead, without minimum staffing, MDPD continues to let officers patrol without sufficient backup. Calls stack up, proactive policing goes out the window. Just not enough cops to do anything proactive.

    Who's going to say it's not possible in the county police department to get this into the contract? Come on, who? Because I'll reply "then how is it that the County Fire department has minimum staffing??" The short answer is, because the fire Union fought for it and it's in their contract. It's the same county government. Try sending out an ambulance with one fireman on it, to drive the truck and then treat the patient. That would be ridiculous, right? But MDPD will send out one police officer riding by him or herself, with another officer as the acting sergeant, to patrol an entire area in a district, because everyone else is either out sick, on light duty, or manning the ever important front desk. When shit hits the fan (shooting, chase, perimeter) the shift supervisor gets on the radio to borrow officers from other districts.... Basically other parts of the county who are already low on officers anyway.

    It's plain stupid. It's plain UNSAFE.

    As long as Gimenez is Mayor we are screwed.

    Get used to it. Sorry, it's a reality.

    Consider this:

    1. Mayor was found by the courts that he violated labor related laws.
    2. Mayor appealed and lost.
    3. Mayor was ORDERED to pay the money back to the employees.
    4. Mayor thumbs his nose at the courts and doesn't pay back a dime.
    5. We smile and do nothing.

    We don't have a contract now. The whole membership should start putting pressure on the Union to fight for this. We are not going to get what we don't ask for. Or demand. Carlos2 won't be the Mayor forever. I refuse to get used to working without enough safety. Half the time my backup is from one of the local municipalities because they have plenty of officers working.

    Hey John and PBA go get a copy of the Beaches New contract, a raise for speaking 2 languages. Maybe you can learn how to negotiate from thier Union. And that's not all!!!!!! The new officers at MDPd may think twice about ebben staying here,our future is uncertain just ask around!

    The city has a minimum in every net area. If the crew stays short they usually announce for anyone to volunteer for overtime. If numbers are still not sufficient with volunteers then they draft that way there is not below staff in areas

    I think most of them do.
    Does anyone know?

    Why engage in needless; time consuming research? The City of Miami has the model; demand equal protection! While the classification waits for re-negotiation on this urgent OFFICER SAFETY concern, leadership starts with the director. Perez must issue a directive for all district patrol squads to be adequately staffed – at least six operational officers per squad – to meet or even exceed officer safety standards. On an immediate; urgent case, management can and should ask officers to hold over on a 'shift extension,' overtimes basis, with seniority serving as a determining factor as to whom are drafted. When urgency is not a concern, officers will be allowed to sign to work one of their days off according to demands for service and staffing shortages on their respective platoons. This is not new; it has been done before!

    Show your mettle Perez and let us see whether or not your are Gimenez' sock puppet. Officers' lives and limbs are at stake!

    Great Idea, worthy idea but dead on arivial!

    Simply stated it would cost millions to have minimum staffing at MDPD and until their is a tragedy tied directly to a shortage nothing will happen. Their is no urgency form our leadership or our union on the issue so politicians who only react to urgency have no incentive to act.

    Oh by the way something else that went very very unnoticed was the extra cost of the body cams to include the station retrofits, and shift extensions for at least the first few weeks as the system gets rolled out. None of these cost were included in any grants or pre budgeted meaning MDPD has to "eat" the cost out of its own budget. Simply stated if you thought things were tight before fasten your seat belts

    12-hour shifts will boost road patrol. Also, patrol vehicles are needed asap.

    Many people who work at Halendale PD and Sarasota Sheriffs office hate the 12 hour shift, total moral killer and very hard on the bodies for the cops, pray that doesn't happen here
